Broadman’s cytoarchitectonic field 5 is the cortex of the cerebral hemispheres , which is located in the superior parietal lobe behind the postcentral gyrus . It is a secondary somatosensory zone. When a person is affected, astereognosis occurs.
Histology
In 1909, the German neurologist Corbinian Broadmann published [1] maps of cytoarchitectonic fields of the cerebral cortex . The 5th field is located in the upper parietal lobe, behind the postcentral gyrus .
Features of the histological structure of Brodmann’s 5th cytoarchitectonic field:
- developed internal granular (IV) layer and a layer of pyramidal neurons (III)
- underdeveloped ganglionic (V) layer
- a clear border between the V and VI (multiform) layers not containing nerve cells
Function and semiotics of defeat
Broadman’s 5th cytoarchitectonic field receives information mainly from the primary somatosensory zone located in the postcentral gyrus and represented by fields 3, 1 and 2. In the secondary zones (including the 5th Broadman’s field), the information received and processed in detail is processed primary zones " [2] . In the 5th field, those areas are developed that are responsible for receiving information (IV layer) and transmitting it to other parts of the cortex (III layer — axons of nerve cells which form associative and commissural fibers) [3] .
In the 5th and 7th fields there is an analysis and processing of the information received in the postcentral gyrus of both deep and surface sensitivity . These fields provide stereognosis - the recognition of objects by touch.
The defeat of Broadman’s 5th cytoarchitectonic field is characterized by the occurrence of astereognosis - impaired ability to recognize an object by touch. A person clearly defines the properties of an object: “hard” or “soft”, “cold” or “warm”, “smooth” or “embossed”, etc. At the same time, he loses the ability to analyze the information received and determine the object itself [4] .
