BGN / PCGN Romanization is a method of Romanizing Belarusian Cyrillic text developed by the United States Geographic Names Council (BGN) and the Permanent Geographic Names Committee for British Official Use (PCGN). It was approved by BGN and PCGN in 1979. It is part of the BGN / PCGN Romanization System Kit, which includes methods for 29 different languages.
The BGN / PCGN system is relatively easier to pronounce and more intuitive to the English-speaking reader than other systems of Romanianizing the Belarusian language.
This system uses only the basic Latin alphabet and punctuation marks . No diacritics or unusual letters are required, although there is an optional rule of use, in order to avoid ambiguity, the interpolation mark “·”.
