El Micdadia ( Arabic. المقدادية ) is a city in Iraq in the province of Diyala . Located 80 km north-east of Baghdad and 30 km north-east of Baakuba , at an altitude of 54 m above sea level [1] . The population of the city is about 298,000 people. Most of the population is represented by Arabs , Kurds and Turkomans also live. Until the 1960s and 1970s, Shiite Kurds formed the basis of the population of El-Mikdadiya; Now the number of the Kurdish population is estimated at only 3%.

The city existed during the time of the Persian Sasanian Empire and then bore the name "Shahraban" (it is still so called in Kurdish).
