Esplanade (Daugavpils)

Esplanade ( Latvian: Esplanāde ) is a district of the city of Daugavpils [1] [2] ( Latvia ), located directly to the north-west of the city center . The population is about five thousand people (in 2013), which introduces it into the six largest districts of the city by population [3] .

Cinema "Oktobris"

The area is located on the perimeter of the streets Kandavas — Vienibas, parts of Balwa, Cietokshnya. It borders with the districts Fortress , Railway , Center . Previously, it was the border of the city in housing, then an open field passed through the fortress - the esplanade .

In the second half of the 1950s, a housing estate called “Cheryomushki” was built along Kandavas Street by analogy with the Moscow district of the same name. A secondary school No. 4 (now the Gymnasium of the Center) with its own stadium was built, a volleyball school and a sports store “Sport 2000” (former youth cafe “Cosmos”) are located nearby. The main streets of the district were Kandavas, Tsietokshnya (Fortress, then Suvorova) and Vienibas (5th of August). In 1949, a tram line was crossed from the central market to the fortress across the Shunitsa river. The lower dam is accessible to the ramparts on the esplanade, in contrast to the upper dam along the bank of the Dvina . In the area of ​​the esplanade there is also a furniture store, a trade union library of communal enterprises, in 1977 the Oktobris cinema was built, in 1991 - the Austra (later the Renaissance). Three (August 5) and two (Suvorov) nine-story buildings rose along the edge. Garages to Balva, the first BWC parking lot in the city (under it partially removed the brick of the blown up Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in 1969) to Balva, a balneotherapy center.

Modernity

There is a College of Music, the Daugavpils City Gymnasium of the Center, the Daugavpils Multifunctional Sports Complex , a sports complex with a swimming pool of the Daugavpils University , Latgale Zoo , Maxima supermarket, one of the first stores in the city. Cafe Cosmos was rebuilt in 1999–2000 into a two-story Ditton Bouvet store, then Meistars, Santekh, fast food restaurant Subburger, beverage store Cosmos, cinema Renaissance (formerly Oktobris, closed in 2010), the scientific center “Zili Briinumi” (on the site of the former cinema).

Tram route No. 3 and city bus routes No. 4 , 5, 13, 17, 17A, and minibus 13a run through the district.
