The city was known to the ancient Greeks . Because of the large Jewish community in the Middle Ages, the city of Zaha was called the "Jerusalem of the East." Due to the persecution that began at the end of the 19th century, local Jews became one of the first settlers in Palestine in the 1920s; so many Jews moved from here to Israel in the 1950s.
The city of Zahu is the center of the Zahu Diocese of the Chaldean Catholic Church .
