Story

It has been 18 months since the flooding of Jacinto . The Locust Horde suffered heavy losses, but was not completely destroyed, and the Lambents (Another name - Flashing; Luminous), which were formed due to the locust mutations from the Emulsion, evolved and became much more dangerous, releasing their "stems" from the ground, thereby throwing his own strength anywhere in the world. The United States coalition now exists only “on paper” after Chairman Richard Prescott disappeared in an unknown direction. Groups of survivors of the Gears are scattered around the war-ravaged Serea, in particular, Colonel Victor Hoffman holds the defenses at Enville Gate, the old garrison of the Coalition of the Pendulum War, and Marcus Phoenix and his Delta Squad are based on the aircraft carrier Lord ( CNV Sovereign ) wandering by sea away from the Lambents. The heroes have changed considerably since the loss of Jacinto: Dominic Santiago continues to grieve over his wife Maria, Anya Straud, the girl of Marcus and the former communications officer are now a full-fledged “Gear”, and Marcus himself is haunted by nightmares in which he does not have time to save his father during the Locust attack on their house.

While Augustus Cole and his people are sent to his hometown of Hanover for supplies, a lively and healthy Prescott arrives at Vladyka. He demands that he be taken to Hoffman, but when he finds out that he is not there, he decides to speak with another "superior officer", that is, with the captain of the aircraft carrier Quentin Michaelson. Finally, Prescott gives Marcus the disk on which was a message from Marcus's father, Adam Phoenix. He turns out to be alive and well, but was safely hidden by the Coalition. At this very moment, the “Lord” is attacked by Leviathan Lambentov. The battle turns out to be hot, and Delta survives only through a trap set up by Damon Byrd.

In parallel, Cole, Byrd, Clayton Carmine (brother of two other Carmines who died during the Light Offensive and Operation Storm in the Hole ) and female soldier Samantha Byrne arrive in Hanover. There they find several Exile camps hostile to the Coalition, but nonetheless Cole’s past as an athlete and a thrashball star helps not to be killed on the spot. Cole himself, without pretending, feels unwell because everything in the city reminds him of his glorious past as a thrashball legend, starting from advertising signs in a local supermarket, ending with a locker room in the stadium, where he even stopped the Lambent invasion, laying explosives in the “stem” in the form of a touchdown (this moment he sees as the final of the National League). Having gathered some ammunition and supplies, Byrd and Cole receive a message about Leviathan's attack on the ship. Byrd offers to use weapons that are on the Centennial Bridge. Once there, the Gears find out that he is busy with the feral members of the Locust Horde. Having dealt with them, Byrd decides to dump the containers on the bridge full of tickers. Although the explosion destroyed Leviathan, the “Lord” came to an end.

While the Gears helped the survivors, Marcus received from the dying Prescott, who told him to find the secret base of Azur and gave the decryption key to disk A2897, which stores the secret data of the Coalition, including the whereabouts of Azura, which was occupied several days ago by Locust, led by the Queen Mirroy. The recovered message from Adam Phoenix contained a message to Marcus, in which his father says that Emulsion was to blame for the Breakthrough Day and the appearance of the Lambents, and that Prescott specifically staged the death of the scientist in order to transfer him to Azura. Marcus is angry, but ready to follow the Chairman’s last order and go to the Gates of Anville, where Hoffman is located, at whose disposal is the A2897. The only way to get to Hoffman is to go through the Dead Wastelands hosted by Wild Locusts.

On the basis of the Wild Locust, Delta hijacks a Gas Barge (a kind of airship), in which a huge reptile-like creature resembles a balloon fish acts as an analogue of a balloon. On the way to the Gates of Anvil, Marcus rescues Dizzy Wallin, who is trapped. Mirra herself is on the way of the heroes, who shot down the Gas Barge, trying to stop the Delta in their goal of saving Adam Phoenix. After the crash, Marcus and his fighters are picked up by the Anvil Gate garrison commanded by Hoffman and Sergeant Bernadette “Bernie” Mataki, the oldest of all “gear” women on the planet. Deciphering A2897 had to be postponed due to a sudden locust attack of Queen Mirra, and then Lambentov. At the last moment, Byrd manages to fix the Hammer of Dawn guidance system and an orbital strike destroys the enemy’s forces.

Deciphering A2897 showed that Azura is a remote island in the middle of the Seran Ocean, hidden from prying eyes by an artificial storm generator. The only way to get there is to get a submarine, and then deactivate the generator, allowing reinforcements to land freely. The delta is divided: Byrd, Cole and Carmine go to Halvo Bay for reinforcements , and Marcus, House, Anya and Sam go, on a tip from Hoffman, to the ruins of the city of Char, where you can find a submarine at a local shipyard, and the House suggests going to the small town of Mercy, where you can get the Emulsion. Marcus agrees, since Mercy is also the hometown of Maria Santiago, the wife of the House, where he buried her parents and their children who died on the day of the Breakthrough.

Having arrived at Mercy with some adventure, Delta notices that the city was much inhabited by the Exiles, and most recently it was empty, besides, explosives were installed along the entire pipeline for pumping the Emulsions. Having defused the third explosive, a feral old man tells them not to do this because of a certain epidemic in the city, after which he disappears into the sewers, where he is later found dead. Delta continues to explore the sewers, where they find a terrible discovery: not only Locusts, but also people are exposed to mutations from the Emulsion. Delta has to enter into a difficult confrontation with the lambent people and having reached the surface, they warn Dizzy about the danger and that they need to leave the city sooner, but he notices that they somehow need an emulsion for a submarine. Having reached the city hall, the soldiers beat off the attacks of the Lambents, after which they learned from the only surviving Exile that the neglected stage of the “Corrosion of the Lungs”, a disease that appeared after the Light Offensive due to the evaporation of the Emulsion that entered the atmosphere of Sera after the bomb explosion, caused the mutation.

Ultimately, Delta gets to the cemetery where the fuel pump is located. While refueling is taking place, the House decides to approach the gravestone of the Flores family, Maria's parents (the remains of their children, Benedict and Sylvia, are also located there. He turns to his wife, saying that he is sorry that he did not return her home, although now she is with the children and one day he will join them. Finally, the House hangs on the neck of the “praying angel” its army badge , hanging on the same chain as Mary’s necklace. The lull is broken by the lambent people locked in the church. When they were finished, Delta made his way through the church catacombs, which surprisingly increased the level of the Emulsion. The plan for fuel production fails after the superior locust forces approached the Merci, and the fuel truck was too badly damaged and Dizzy was unable to patch all the holes in it. At a gas station, Marcus and his men are attacked simultaneously by both Locusts and Lambents. Dominic is cut off from the detachment and realizing all the hopelessness of the situation, he decides to sacrifice himself in order to save his comrades. He unhooks the fuel truck from the truck and goes into the tunnel to take the acceleration from the other side and blow up the fuel truck together with the station, Locust and Lambents at the same time. Although Delta managed to escape from the explosion, the death of Dominic Santiago has a very strong emotional blow, especially for Marcus Phoenix, for whom the House was like a sibling.

The next destination of the Delta is the ruins of the metropolis of Char, the first city of Sera, which was destroyed by the Hammer of Dawn a year after the Breakthrough Day, reminiscent of the terrible ashes of people throughout the city, frozen in the last moment of their lives. Leaving Dizzy to guard the car, Delta makes his way into the city through the "mass grave" and chases a strange man who set traps in their path and tried to kill, dumping burning barrels on their heads. All the same, they overtake him, smeared in ashes to pretend to be one of the “remains”, and he says that someone Griffin has a negative attitude towards strangers, especially the “gears” of the Coalition. It turns out that the local Exiles live in makeshift dwellings on the tops of skyscrapers and move between them at the expense of funiculars, and they are headed by Aaron Griffin, the former CEO of the Griffin Emulsion Corporation, one of the largest Sulfur extraction companies on the planet. Griffin does not hide his hatred of everything related to the Coalition of the United States, which destroyed his city and its business. Since the First Rule of Business is the question “What is my benefit?”, Griffin agrees to help Delta Squad if they make it to the Emulsion Cleaning Station and return a late load of fuel to it. As a guarantee of the deal, Griffin takes Dizzy hostage and gives the “gears” one hour to complete the assignment.

The delta goes to the station along the huge crater from the impact of the Hammer of Dawn, and Anya Straud recalls that she was in the Headquarters when they "pressed the button." The path to the station runs through the busy Lambent, crumbling remains of old metro lines. In the cleaning workshop, Delta does not find anyone except lambent people, and on the walls and floor - spilled Imulsions, which further confirms concerns about fuel toxicity. In the freight elevator that delivers the heroes to the top of the factory, they are attacked by Hanker, a mutated Boomer, who had previously met in Hanover. On the roof, the squad finds a funicular with a batch of fuel. But the emergency fuse does not allow him to budge. As a result, the battle with the Lambents begins, during which the fuse was turned off. When the funicular was ready to be sent, Marcus receives a message from Dizzy saying that Mirra and her swarm attacked the Griffin Tower, and in confirmation of this, Delta sees the tower being fired by Tempest - Queen Locust's personal fighting bug.

On the way back, the Delta funicular enters the battle with two Gas Barges and the Royal Guard. Transport does not deliver them to the roof, but three floors below, where loading and unloading usually took place. Of the defenders of the roof, only Dizzy and Griffin survived. The former businessman accuses Delta and KOG of all the troubles of the world, not embarrassed by the words, to which Marcus answers no less sharply that he recently lost his “brother”, and Griffin with his opinion and Imulsion can go “to hell.” Griffin says it's still not over, after which he gets on the funicular and drives off.

Delta heads to Endeavor Shipyard, located near Halvo Bay. All this time Mirra has been watching them, saying that Marcus went to his father - stubborn, but predictable, and instructs his soldiers to end his campaign here, otherwise the Locust race will cease to exist. At the gates of the shipyard, the truck meets heavy fire, but the Delta breaks through and goes deep into the shipyard, into the submarine's hangar. In the first hangar, they find only an old cruiser, covered with mold and something that looks like a cobweb. At another hangar, one of Mirra’s guards releases Serapid, a large millipede emitting electrical impulses. Having overcome all obstacles, Marcus and his fighters get to the necessary hangar, where they find a small submarine BKK Adamant, developed during the Pendulum War for special forces, but, as Dizzy said, for the submarine to return to service, it needs a new rotor and fuel. Marcus finds the necessary spare part and transfers it with the help of a robot loader, also using the rotor as a weapon against the Locust. In the end, the fighters will have to face the Armored Cantus, the last of Mirra's guards on the way to Azura. As a result, the Adamant was launched, and Delta is preparing to travel to Azura. Anya contacts Cole to say that they have a submarine. Cole, in his usual manner, jokes about what they and Bird found in Halvo Bay, but sorrow for Dominic Santiago does not allow Anya to take the jokes of the former athlete. Cole understands that something happened on the Delta's path to the docks, but Anya says nothing about the House.

Sailing across the Seran Ocean, the Adamant has to fight with the Manglers and Leviathan among the ruins of a flooded city and pass through minefields. The artificial storm protecting Azura turns out to be too strong, even for a submarine, which makes it drift away, but Dizzy manages to keep the ship afloat, although Delta was faced with yet another test ahead, in the form of automatic torpedo turrets placed in case of “uninvited guests”, if someone thinks of going around a storm. Azura's submarine dock meets heroes with a sea of corpses floating in the water. Dizzy remains in the submarine to help with the evacuation if something happens, and Delta goes to the artificial storm generator to turn it off and give way for reinforcements. During fierce battles with Locust at the station, the tunnels are blocked. Anya is trying to contact Cole and Byrd, but due to the storm they are not available, however, one person still responds to the signal - Adam Phoenix. Seeing his son through the security camera, Adam starts asking about the House and notices a scar on his son's face, but Marcus leaves all the questions for later. Adam Phoenix says that he is locked in a hotel tower and asks Delta to get to him as soon as possible, since the Lambents end their life cycle and soon they will transform into something that will destroy all life on Sulfur, if not to end Imulsia. The scientist opens a service tunnel for the soldiers to get to the artificial storm generator.

On the way to the generator, Delta notices that scientists who were officially declared dead, including Adam Phoenix, have been on this island all these years. Once in place, Marcus asks for forgiveness from his father that he did not save him then and talks about the death of Dominic, and Adam apologizes for the fact that because of him Marcus was under the tribunal and promises that his son and his friends will have a future. Although the power was turned off, the artificial storm generator continued to work, then Adam, suspecting that Locust had a spare power source, advised Delta to disconnect the cooling system, from which the generator would be disconnected, but there would be a very big explosion. When the generator is destroyed, a picturesque view of the island's rainforest opens in front of the Delta. Anya contacts Cole, but Byrd answers her, and Cole swears that a whole fleet sailed with them “to the party”. The next second, ships of the Horasnian Republic, a member of the Union of Independent Republics, appear in the bay. One of the Raven helicopters lands Bert and Cole along with the restored robot Jack. Marcus reports the death of the House, which shocks the cynic of Byrd, who after the mission in Halvo Bay began to treat everything with great attention, and Cole is seriously hungry for blood. Marcus sends Jace and Sam to the ship to help coordinate reinforcements, despite their protests, and Bert manages to cheer Samantha, clearly hinting at the spark between the “gears”. The Delta squad, represented by Marcus Phoenix, Ani Straud, Damon Burt and August Cole, are heading to the main tower of the complex, while the combined forces of the Coalition and the Union landed for a decisive battle against the Locust Horde.

Delta fights against the Locusts with the support of the Raven, with Clayton Carmine for the machine gun and robot Jack, which Bird equipped with shock weapons. Landing is complicated by artillery and gas barges, which becomes an additional task for the Delta on the way to Adam Phoenix. The luxury that opens before the fighters indicates the main goal of Azura - this is not a military complex or a refugee reception station, but a universal bunker for senior political officials and members of the Coalition society, where they could wait out the war. After destroying the dam of the hydroelectric power station, Marcus contacts his father to find out how to activate his weapon against the Lambents, and the scientist replies that he has the key and that’s all that is needed. When asked by Byrd about the principle of operation of this weapon, Adam Phoenix says that it is like a neutron bomb, only without explosion, and that its target is Lambent cells. After the destruction of the last Siege Monster, Delta informs the landing commander, Captain Miran Trescu, that the last artillery gun was destroyed, but suddenly the “stems” of Lambentov appeared from the water and the ground and the situation became even worse.

In the main tower, Byrd asks Marcus about the death of the House, but he leaves this conversation until the end of the mission, and Anya wonders how Prescott, while everyone on Sulfur was starving and dying, could have such a luxurious refuge, but the question is - having Azura, why the chairman I was almost at the forefront all the time. At the entrance to the tower, Delta is greeted by a detachment of Queen Mirra's guards, and after the shootout, Byrd asks that if Emulsion is a parasite and not only Sarncha, but people are infected, will Adam Phoenix answer them, that he had already experienced it and that would not harm the human body in any way if contact with the Imulsion was not long-term.

On the way to Adam Phoenix, the delta was between a rock and a hard place - on one side Mirra and her Locust, on the other Lambenta. On the way, Byrd notices, looking at the statues and other decorations, that in addition to the bunker for the nobility, it is also a repository of works of art, in particular from the National Museum of Ether. On the way through the elevators, the detachment is divided and assembled again only on the upper floors, where Mirra is already waiting for them. Rising higher and higher, Marcus and Byrd defeat Mirra and her Tempest, dropping a large ball on him from the ceiling, but she is unable to find out whether she is alive or not - the Lambents are torn into the building.

To pass the Locust checkpoint at the exit of the elevator, Delta moves through service corridors. Hearing the death of Mirra, Adam Phoenix does not hide his chagrin, Byrd is surprised that Adam Phoenix knew her even before the war and she looks like a man. Having dealt with the ambush and disabling the security system, Marcus reunites with his father after many years. Adam shows the activation key, which is similar to that used for the Hammer of Dawn and apologizes for everything that happened and wants that when it all ends, Marcus and his friends live a full life, without regrets, but looking back. The scientist also says that when the Emulsion began to spread more strongly and the first Lambents appeared among the Locusts, it became clear that the fuel for which the Coalition and the Union had been tearing each other's throats for 79 years was a deadly parasite. Adam tried to find a way to stop the Emulsion in order to prevent Locust from dying, but time was running out, and when Queen Mirra’s patience ended, Breakthrough Day began, the Locust’s attempt to save himself, which grew into 17 years of hell of war.

At the top of the tower where the Counter-Emulsion Cannon is installed, Delta cleans the area around, letting Adam Phoenix activate it, but Tempest and Mirra appear, who do not want the death of her people. Carmine, who came to the rescue, fires a beetle from a machine gun, but Tempest knocks his Crow down. The cartridges are powerless against the beetle, and Adam opens the columns in which the laser designators for the Hammer of Dawn are located. Marcus uses orbital weapons against Tempest and he dies. The “stalks” of the Lambents break out onto the roof, sending all their strength against Delta. Adam says the installation must gain full power before activation. To Byrd’s question about the tests, Adam admits that in order to test the life cycle of the Emulsion in the human body, he injected himself. Marcus is seriously alarmed, because he remembers what this rubbish did to the Exiles in Mercy and the workers of the Refinery in Char. The Impulse of the Counter-Emulsion Cannon releases three waves of different powers, killing the Lambents and the “stems” on the roof. At this point, Marcus learns that his father deliberately accelerated the spread of Imulsion cells in his body for the sake of experimentation, and now he will die just like all Lambents and the Locust Horde. Now the old man asks his son to live on, for his sake, without looking back, after which he crumbles to dust. In the hands of Marcus remain only his "gear" tokens. Mirra, who had gotten out from under Tempest, laughs that Adam Phoenix was ruined by his arrogance, and that with every attempt to find a way to stop death, he found only weapons of mass destruction - the Hammer of Dawn, the flooding of Jacinto, the locust genocide. In response, Marcus Phoenix stabs the queen with a combat knife, Dominic Santiago, as revenge for all those who died in this war.

Another wave of energy spreads throughout Sulfur, destroying the Lambents and the Locust Horde, which is clearly seen by the defenders of Enville Gate, and the Emulsion factories explode. The main tower of Azura is all on fire, but the Delta Squad goes to one of the squares where the landed coalition fighters greet them as heroes, including Samantha Byrne, Jace Stratton, Dizzy Wallin and, alive and well, Clayton Carmine. Marcus Phoenix, who no longer feels like a hero and no longer wants to be the Gear of War, drops his rifle and equipment, and goes to the beach, where he sits on a stone and holds his canonical black bandana, which, it seems, has not been removed from the moment Dominic Santiago pulled him out of prison. Anya Straud approaches him, saying that no matter what happens, she will be with him. Marcus Phoenix asks her only one question: “What do they have left?”, To which she replies that for the first time in the years of the ongoing struggle, they have a “ tomorrow ”.

Development

The fate of Carmine

July 21, 2010 Epic Games said that Clayton Carmine, the brother of Anthony and Benjamin from the first two parts of the game, will be one of the characters in Gears of War 3. From July 29 to September 6, 2010, players were asked to decide Clayton's fate: in Xbox Live, in the section clothes for avatars appeared two T-shirts with the inscriptions “Save Carmine” (from the English - “Save Carmine”) and “Carmine Must Die” (from the English - “Carmine must die”). Players were offered to purchase the first if they want Carmine to survive in the third part, or the second so that Carmine, like his brothers, is killed [5] .

In addition to virtual things, San Diego Comic-Con sold real T-shirts with the same inscriptions. During the entire campaign, $ 150,000 was raised, all funds were transferred to the Child's Play charity [6] .

In the end, Clay Carmine survives, although the player is “teased” several times by the danger of his death. For example, closer to the beginning a sniper shoots him in the head. So Anthony was killed. Clay is saved by a helmet that he never takes off; at the same time, the helmet in Gears of War is a sign of a secondary character - a “red shirt” , almost doomed to death. Then they shot down a helicopter with him on board. Benjamin died after such a crash. But Clayton puts his helmet back on - the camera avoids his face - and takes on the help of a wounded comrade. The epigraph to this is a cry in a multiplayer game: "Well, who is the consumable now !?" ( Eng. "Now how's expendable !?" ).

All three brothers were voiced by Michael Gough [7] .
