The Beginning of a Military Career and World War I
In October 1910, he volunteered for military service, in the jaeger battalion. Since June 1913 - lieutenant.

Between Wars
In April 1920, he was dismissed from military service (according to the Versailles reduction of the Reichswehr), with the rank of senior lieutenant. He was educated as an agronomist, worked in agriculture.
In January 1934 he returned to military service, with the assignment of the rank of captain. By the beginning of the Second World War - Major, commander of an infantry battalion.
World War II
He participated in the Polish (1939) and French (1940) campaigns.
Since April 1941 - lieutenant colonel, commander of the reserve regiment. Since September 1941 - commander of the rifle regiment of the 12th Panzer Division. Fights in the Smolensk region, in the Moscow direction. In February 1942 - awarded the Golden German Cross, from April - Colonel, in May 1942 - awarded the Knight's Cross.
In August 1943, for fights in the Bolkhov area, von Müller was awarded Oak leaves to the Knight's Cross. In the same month, he was sent as a teacher to a tank school (in France).
From August 1944 - commander of the 16th Panzer Division (on the Eastern Front), from November 1944 - Major General.
In January 1945, the von Müller division fought on the bridgehead in the Narew area, suffered heavy losses and retreated. In February 1945, von Müller was awarded Swords (No. 134) to the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves.
On April 20, he was promoted to lieutenant general.
On April 19, 1945, von Müller was captured by partisan in Moravia .
After the war
In October 1955, Lieutenant General von Müller was released from Soviet captivity.
