General Information

The first seeding number in the single player tournament was Robin Söderling (No. 8 in the world at that time). Confirming his status, the Swede did not easily get to the finals, where he could not cope with the fifth sowing racket: the Spaniard Fernando Verdasco , losing to him in three protracted games. Fernando at this tournament was forced to play three-set fights several times: in the third round he spent the same number of games to defeat Jürgen Meltzer . Last year's competition champion - Rafael Nadal - was supposed to defend his title, but at the last moment withdrew from the tournament due to fatigue. [1] The Dutchman Timo de Bakker , who outplayed two sowed rivals: Juan Carlos Ferrero and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, became the strongest of the seedless participants in the Catalan prize.

For the second year in a row, the strongest were Nenad Zimonich and Daniel Nestor , three of four of their matches in the tournament who won decisive tie-breaks, but never played with seeded opponents. The rivals of the Serbo-Canadian pair in the title match were the Mark Knowles / Lleyton Hewitt alliance, outplaying both seeded teams with Polish athletes on the way to this stage: the Kubot / Marah pair in the second round and the Firststenberg / Matkovsky alliance in the semifinals.
