Biography

Childhood and adolescence Makgakian fell at the peak of the escalation of the conflict in Northern Ireland . The girl had to go to Dublin , Republic of Ireland , where she enrolled in a technology college with the prospect of obtaining an engineering degree. But most of her life was occupied by an amateur theater, in which Mary and her friends served as director from stage to stage. Hobby has become a profession. Makgakian studies directing, acting, set design at various courses in England, France, Italy.

Returning to Ireland in the early 90s, Mary Makgakian organizes her own film studio, where she makes several films: “Words on the Window Glass” ( eng. Words Upon The Windowpane - based on the Yets' play), “This is the Sea” ( Eng. This Is the Sea ) and "Best" ( English. Best - in this case, a pun: the name of the hero of the picture, the famous Irish footballer George Best in English - "the best"). Films, one way or another, affect the various facets of the history and modernity of Ireland. In 2001, the studio opens a division in England. As a gifted producer, Mary McGuckian intelligently uses tax breaks and budget subsidies within the EU for the development of international cultural projects. She is seeking funding for the grandiose design of the film adaptation of the eponymous novel by Thornton Wilder's "Bridge of King Louis Saint . " The film was shot in Spain with the involvement of a strong team of Hollywood actors ( M. Abraham , Bates , Byrne , De Niro ) and European filmmakers. But critics have been very negative about the film. [1] On the other hand, in only 6 months of rent in the USA, the film in box office revenue almost doubled its budget. [2]

Mary McGuckian is experimenting with new digital video features and relatively innovative techniques for working with artists. The result was the film "Gossip from Reg" (?) English. "Rag Tale" (the name of the satirical drama is difficult to translate; implies stories from a certain tabloid tabloid "The Rag"). This is the first part of the conceived “immoral trilogy”. In the period of preparation for the shooting, the director and actors discussed the characters for two weeks, and then, improvising directly in front of the camera, they self-built the dialogues. This film was left out of the close attention of the author's cinema and was perceived negatively. “The film is entertaining, with sharp storylines, but completely unwatchable. Crazy amateur-style video shots look like the cameraman does yoga and aerobics at the same time. ”// Guardian (October 9, 2005). [3] For the second part of the trilogy - "Intervention" ( English Intervention ), McGaqian received in 2007 the award of the author's film festival in San Diego , for the best feature film. To date, this is the highest achievement in the career of MacGuckian.
