Epsom ( English Epsom [ˈɛpsəm] ) - a city in the UK , located in the county of the same name in the county of Surrey , in the south-east of England , 25 kilometers south-west of London [1] . The population of Epsom is 27,065 people (as of 2009 ).

The name of the city comes from the name of one of the Saxon leaders, Ebba , who landed here and built a village in the VI century. Archaeological finds dating back to the 7th century made in Epsom County are kept in the British Museum . In 933 , under the Anglo-Saxon king Ethelstan , Chertsy Abbey (now the city) was founded on the territory of the present Eps district. Epsom is mentioned in the Doomsday Book under 1086 under the name Eversham .
Since the 18th century, Epsom has been a resort with springs of valuable mineral water [1] . For the purpose of entertaining vacationers and holiday-makers in Epsom, at the end of the same century horse races began, which made Eps famous all over the world: Oax (since 1779) and Epsom derby (since 1780) [2]

In 1695, salt was extracted from the mineral water of the Epsom spring, which had a bitter taste and laxative effect. Pharmacists called it bitter salt, as well as English, or Epsom salt [3] . Mineral epsomite has the composition MgSO 4 · 7H 2 O.
