Biography

The nickname "Sinait" indicates that Anastasius II, like his predecessor Anastasius I, was a monk of the Sinai monastery and, possibly, was his abbot . In 599 he ascended the Antiochian patriarchal throne .

He corresponded with Pope Gregory I , as evidenced by the pope's response message relating to the beginning of the patriarchate of Anastasius. He is the author of polemic works against the Jews . He translated into Greek the treatise of Pope Gregory I “ On pastoral care ” ( lat. De cura pastorali ), the translation has not been preserved. Anastasia is also credited with the authorship of the work “ On the Providence ” ( Greek Περὶ Προνοίας ), which was signed by Anastasius of Antioch.

In 609, during the unrest in Antioch , organized according to the statement of Fofan the Confessor by the Jews (according to another version, the conflict occurred between supporters of various circus parties) Anastasius was killed:

In this year, the restless Jews of Antioch rebelled against the Christians, killed Anastasius the Great, the patriarch of Alexandria, put in childbirth parts and dragged him in the middle of the city, killed many rulers with him and burned them with houses.

Honor

Memorial Day of the Holy Martyr Anastasius contains the Typicon of the Great Church ( X century ) and a number of stoic Greek Sinaxars. In 1603, on the basis of Byzantine chronicles, a short life was compiled by Anastasius, placed in the Venetian edition of Greek Minea . In Slavic and Russian manuscript months, the memory of Anastasius is extremely rare (contained in the Slavic translation of the 13th Century Verse Prologue , in the Grigorovich Minea of the 13th century and Draganova Minea of the end of the 13th century). In the modern calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church, the memory of Anastasia is absent. In Orthodox Greek churches, the memory of Anastasia is celebrated on April 20 (according to the Julian calendar )

In the Catholic Church, the memory of Anastasia is celebrated on December 21 .
