Biography

Born September 18, 1909 in the village of Kostovo [1] . He began working at the age of sixteen as a locksmith apprentice. After graduating from the Leningrad Maritime College, he worked in the workshops of LOOSVOD, at the Dvigatel and Pnevmatika factories.

Without interruption from production, he graduated from the Leningrad Industrial Institute and in 1938 came to the LMZ, where he worked as a foreman, senior foreman, deputy chief and head of the hydroturbine workshop, head of production, secretary of the party committee, and from 1960 to 1973 - director of the plant.

During the Great Patriotic War, A. A. Gruzdev went to defense work near Leningrad , from 1943 he set up tank repairs at the Metal Plant, the manufacture of armored personnel carriers, armored trains and other military equipment, together with all courageously endured the hardships of the enemy blockade.

He supervised the creation of steam turbines with capacity from 100 to 800 MW, hydraulic for the Bratsk , Krasnoyarsk , Ust-Ilim and the world's largest Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power stations , for the high-altitude Aswan Dam ( Egypt ).

During his work, the director of the enterprise reconstructed the foundry and model shops, commissioned the world's largest hydraulic turbine laboratory, completed the construction of the engineering building. The work of the VTUZ has been resumed.

In 1971, for the early fulfillment of the tasks of the five-year plan and the development of the production of large unique steam, hydraulic and gas turbines, LMZ was awarded the Order of the October Revolution.

Alexander Alexandrovich was actively and fruitfully engaged in social and party work. He was elected as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Leningrad City Council, worked as secretary of the party committee of the plant, was elected a delegate to the XXI and XXIII congresses of the party.

He died on September 10, 2000 [2] . He was buried in St. Petersburg at the Theological Cemetery [3] .

  • He was awarded the Orders of Lenin ( 1966 ), the Red Banner of Labor ( 1945 , 1962 ), the Badge of Honor ( 1957 ), the October Revolution ( 1971 ), as well as the Order of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, II degree.

Memory

A. A. Gruzdev is the author of about ten books on the development of turbine construction, economic reform and technological progress at the plant.
