David Strathairn was born in San Francisco , California , in the family of a physician ^[1] . His paternal grandfather, Thomas Scott Strathairn, was a Scottish national, born in Crieff , while his paternal grandmother, Ley, was a Hawaiian ^{[2] [3]} . Strathairn attended Redwood High School in Larkspur, California and graduated from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1970.
