Landing in the port of Otomari on August 25, 1945 - tactical naval landing , landed by the ships of the Soviet Northern Pacific Flotilla during the South Sakhalin operation of the Soviet-Japanese war .

Operation Plan

The purpose of the landing was to accept the surrender of Japanese troops in this largest port in Japanese southern Sakhalin and to prevent the evacuation of troops and material assets to Japan . From Sovetskaya Gavan to the port of Maoka (now Kholmsk), which was just occupied by the Soviet landing party, a combined brigade of sailors of the flotilla (1,600 men) and the 365th separate battalion of marines (600 men) were transferred.

Transition and landing

On August 23, 1945, an airborne landing detachment (a mine-layer , 8 minesweepers , 2 “big hunter” boats and 2 “small hunter” boats , 6 torpedo boats ) left Maoka and headed for Otomari . At the crossing by sea, the ships fell into a severe storm, the squad leader decided to take refuge in the port of Khonto (Nevelsk) . The city was not occupied by Soviet troops, but after the appearance of a large detachment of Soviet ships in the raid, a few Japanese garrison and police immediately capitulated. On the evening of August 24, the ships continued their transition. Due to mine danger, a mine layer with a company of sailors remained in Honto.

On the morning of August 25, the ships arrived at Otomari. After 2 hours, parts of the 113th Infantry Brigade approached the port from the north. The enemy garrison and the personnel of the naval base (3400 people) laid down their arms without resistance and capitulated at 10:00 in the morning. By noon on the same day, all Japanese military units on southern Sakhalin had stopped resistance.

With this landing, the South Sakhalin operation of the Soviet troops ended. The port of Otomari was used as the starting point for the landing on the South Kuril Islands ( Iturup , Kunashir , islands of the Lesser Kuril ridge ).
