Initially, the tiste was a sign of ownership. It consisted of several connected circles or dashes and carried a simplified image of objects (a plow, fish, etc.). Later acquired the quality of a patrimonial sign, changed when passing by inheritance. Akin to the Erzya "teshks" is a sign. Solemn Udm. Pus, Komi Paz, Hung. "Rovásirás". From the tiste came the signs by which debts and sacrificial property were recorded on linden sticks.
In modern Meadow Mari, the word " tiste " refers to a flag.
In Traditions
There is a legend that the Mari prince Burtek, who lived in the 16th century in Mari-Malmyzh , paid taxes to the “Turkish king in Kazan ”. Debts were recorded on sticks with notches, special badges. They drove to Kazan in leather bags [1] .
