Formation

The association was formed in December 1941 on the Western Front as part of ten separate combat engineer brigades (from the 31st to the 40th ). 1 CA was used mainly for servicing the front communications of the front .

By order of the People’s Commissar of Defense of the USSR No. 050, dated December 19, 1941, it was decided to organize the publication of newspapers of engineer armies with a frequency of two times a week with a circulation of 10,000 copies each. The newspaper 1 SA was given the name β€œSon of the Fatherland” [1] .

Since February 1942 (without the 35th combat brigade transferred to the North-Western Front ), it restored the Mozhaisk defense line .

Brigades of the 1st Sapper Army were widely used in road and bridge operations. Ice and bridge crossings were built across the Moscow-Volga canal , the rivers Moscow , Istra , Oka , Ugra , Nara , and Ruza . A large amount of work was carried out by builders to put in order roads that became impassable due to heavy snowfalls . In addition, in the rear of the Western Front, the formation was preparing a line along the Mosalsk – Sukhinichi – Belev line [2] .

In September 1942, the army command was transformed into the 33rd department of defensive construction . The 31st, 32nd, 34th, 36th brigades were transferred directly to the front; The 33rd and 37th are reorganized into specialized units , the rest are disbanded.
