Life and career

1985-2001: The Early Years and the Popstars

Nicola Roberts was born in Stamford , Lincolnshire and raised in Runcorn, Cheshire . She has a sister - Frankie, and two brothers - Harrison and Clayton. Roberts began her musical career with performances as part of the girl pop group The 5 Musketers at a local disco. She also attended a dance school.

In 2002, Nicola was cast on the reality show of ITV Popstars: The Rivals . The program showed the creation of two opposing groups - “boyish” and “girlish”, each of which consisted of five members. Then the created groups competed with each other for the first place in the UK Singles Chart . Several thousand people took part in auditions across the UK in the hope of becoming participants in a reality show. The jury - British producer Pete Waterman, Irish music manager Louis Walsh and singer Jerry Halliwell - selected ten girls and ten boys as finalists. Initially, Nicola Roberts was not included in the top ten, but was later chosen as a replacement for Nicole Ward, who decided to refuse to participate in the show [2] .

2002-2009: Girls Aloud

On November 30, 2002, Nicola Roberts, Nadine Coyle , Sarah Harding , Kimberly Walsh and Cheryl Cole formed the new Girls Aloud group based on the results of the audience voting. The debut single of Sound of the Underground reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. [3] Girls Aloud recorded the single for the shortest time between the formation of the group and reaching first place on the chart [4] . The group released its debut album, Sound of the Underground , on May 23, 2003 [5] , which started on the charts from the second line and in the same year received platinum status.

Since 2003, Girls Aloud have released more than twenty single - almost all of them entered the top ten UK Singles Chart, fifteen of them reached the top five. The singles “ I'll Stand by you ”, “ Walk this way ” and “ The Promise ” took first place. Their two albums reached number one on the UK Albums Chart ( The Sound of Girls Aloud: Greatest Hits and Out of Control ), both of which entered the chart from first place. Girls Aloud were five times nominated for the Brit Awards and won in 2009 in the nomination "Best Single" for the song " The Promise ".

Girls Aloud became one of the few successful reality show projects and saved a fortune of £ 25 million in May 2009 [6] . In 2007, the Guinness Book of Records named Girls Aloud "the most successful group created on the reality show."

In 2009, Girls Aloud decided they would take a year off to do solo projects, but reunited in 2010 for a new studio album [7] . The reunion really took place, but only in 2012 - in honor of the decade of the group. In autumn 2012, Girls Aloud released their second collection of best songs (Nicola became the direct author of one of four new tracks - “On The Metro” [8] ), but after a tour in March 2013 they announced the final dissolution of the band [9] .

2010-Present: Solo Career

In 2010, reports appeared in the press that Nicola Roberts was tired of waiting for the reunion of Girls Aloud and began work on solo material. [10] In December of that year, it was confirmed that Roberts entered into a solo contract with Universal. [11]

The first solo single by Nicola Roberts, “Beat of My Drum”, was released on June 5, 2011 [12] . Nicola described him as “a song to which everyone can dance and sing along to her” and noted that it was very important for her to record a song that was not like anything else [13] . The single reached the twenty-seventh line in the UK Singles Chart [14] .

Nicola's solo album, dubbed Cinderella's Eyes , was released on September 26th. The lead singer of British band Metronomy Joseph Mount, who recorded a duet with Roberts, said that her album would be a big surprise [15] . Roberts herself said that she was very nervous before the release of the album, because she became a co-author of all the songs, and the album turned out to be very personal [16] . She also noted that the album has a "very British sound." [17] The highest position in the UK Albums Chart for Cinderella's Eyes was seventeenth. [18] The album also received great success with music critics.

On July 10, on her Twitter page, Nicola announced that the song “Lucky Day” would be the second single, and it would be released on September 18 [19] . The single reached only the fortieth place on the chart [20] . In September, it became known that the song "Yo-Yo" will be the third single from the album, its release took place on January 9 [21] .

Now Nicola continues to work as a composer, among the performers of her songs is the band Little Mix [22] .
