Created mainly to improve Detroit’s international image, the race (along with Long Beach and Las Vegas) announced an unprecedented three Grand Prix in the United States in the 1982 season. The street track was Bob McCabe's idea, and the city agreed to a configuration along the Detroit River around the brilliant Renaissance Center and the Cobo Arena. Agreements with Bernie Ecclestone were successful, and in 1982 the city accepted the first Grand Prix at the 2.5-mile track.
Most riders weren't impressed with the track, complaining that the track was boring, bumpy and very slippery. Formula 1 would have remained in Detroit, but in 1988, when the contract was re-negotiated, the city refused to pay the required price, and the following year the United States Grand Prix was held in Phoenix, Arizona [1] .
The first Detroit Grand Prix won by John Watson from 17th place, the lowest starting position when he won the race on a street circuit (however, Watson broke his record a year later at Long Beach, starting from 22nd place).
The 1983 race was won by Michele Alboreto at Tyrrell 011 . It was the last of 155 victories of the Cosworth DFV V8 3.0L engine (the first one took place at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands in 1967 ). It was also the last victory for the Tyrrell team (the first took place at the Spanish Grand Prix in 1971 ).
