The chronicle of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Zhomoitsky is a medieval essay outlining the history of the principality from the mythical prince Palemon to Gediminas . It was created in the 1520s among the Vilnius aristocrats.
Chronicle Contents
The chronicle is based on the legend of the origin of the Lithuanian princes from the "Roman gentry" ( patricians ). Oral legends about historical events are given: battles with Tatars, campaigns of Gediminas to South Russia , Ipatiev Chronicle , etc. The heroic past of Lithuania is exalted and Russia is belittled. To justify the superiority of the Lithuanian nobility over the Ukrainian and Belarusian, the antiquity and nobility of the origin of the former, their outstanding role in the life of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania , are emphasized.
Editorial Chronicles
It has been preserved in three editions: short ( list of Krasinsky ), long ( Olshevsky , Archaeological Society , Patriarchal , Rumyantsev lists ) and complete ( Poznansky , Evreinovsky lists ).
The Chronicle served as a source for the Chronicle of Bykhovets , β The Chronicle of Polish, Lithuanian, Zhomoit and All Russia β by Maciej Stryjkovsky and the compilation of Theodor Narbutt's βHistory of the Lithuanian Peopleβ.
