Passenger Terminal 1

The first flights from the military training base of artillery reconnaissance units in Vaner Heide began in 1913. In 1939, a full-fledged Luftwaffe airfield was built on the site of the airfield site, which was later used during the Second World War .

After the war ended, the airfield came under the control of the British military, which carried out a number of works to expand the territory and reconstruct some of the air traffic control facilities. In 1951, the first paved runway with a length of 1866 meters was built, and in the same year the airport was open for civilian aircraft.

In the 1950-1960s, two more runways and a new building of the passenger terminal were put into operation. On November 1, 1970, the airport received the first wide-body airliner, the Boeing 747 , operating a flight New York - Cologne - New York.

In 1986, the American company UPS Airlines selected Cologne / Bonn Airport as its main transit hub in Europe .

In the late 1990s, the airport management began implementing a large-scale program to expand and reconstruct the airport complex, during which the building of the second passenger terminal, a number of new parking lots were built, and in 2004 the Cologne / Bonn Airport station of the Intercity- network was commissioned Express on the high-speed rail Cologne - Frankfurt .

In 2006, the US main airline Continental Airlines introduced a flight to Cologne / Bonn Airport from Newark Liberty Airport , operated daily on Boeing 757-200 aircraft . Due to the reduction in passenger traffic, this flight was canceled on September 4, 2008 [1] .

Low Cost Airlines

Cologne / Bonn Airport is a convenient transit hub for low cost airlines in Germany. The airport tariff policy made it possible to attract German discounters Germanwings and TUIfly in the fall of 2002, who later chose Cologne / Bonn as one of their main hubs . At the end of 2003, they were joined by the British budget carrier EasyJet, and in June 2006 - by the airline Wizz Air . Relatively low prices for aircraft maintenance resulted in an unprecedented increase in passenger traffic at Cologne / Bonn airport in 2003, which was 43% compared to the same period last year.

Since 2015, the airport serves direct flights of Pobeda Airlines from Moscow Vnukovo Airport. From February 17, 2017, the airline opened direct flights from St. Petersburg.

Currently, the airport management expresses a desire to attract airlines that can open low-cost transatlantic routes from Cologne / Bonn airport on a regular basis.
