History
It was founded in 1890 as a postal station on the way from Bulawayo to Salisbury (now Harare ). Until 1982, it was called Gwelo . In 1914 he received the rights of an independent community, in 1971 - the rights of the city.
Geography
The city of Gweru is located in the geographical center of Zimbabwe, on the territory of the Great Dyke geological fault , 164 km northeast of Bulawayo and 275 km southwest of Harare. The absolute height is 1424 meters above sea level [1] .
Economics and Transport
Gweru is a large industrial center - metallurgical products (production of chrome alloys), metalworking, cement, shoe, leather, meat processing industries give products here. In the vicinity of Gweru are the country's largest cattle breeding farms; Viticulture is developed. East of Gweru, in the Great Dyke Fault, there are mining enterprises producing significant amounts of chrome ore, platinum, magnesite and other ore minerals.
The Bulawayo-Harare- Maputo railway line connects Gweru with the Indian Ocean . An airport was built near the city that provides domestic flights.
Gweru is home to the Polytechnic Institute, Midlands State University, and teacher training college.
Population
According to 2013 data, the population is 141,862 people [2] , which makes Gweru the fifth largest city in Zimbabwe. Approximately 70% of the population speaks the Sean language and 30% speak the northern Ndebele language.

Interesting Facts
The famous African athlete-marathon runner Kanda , preparing for the 1968 Olympics (Mexico City) , chose the passenger train between Gweru and Selukwe as a “sparring partner” and never played him [3] .
