In his works on childhood history, deMos identified six different dominant models of attitudes toward children throughout history, substantiated the influence of parenting on childhood on the characteristics of an adult personality, and linked the models of child education he identified with the characteristics of civilization in each period. Six models, according to deMos, are as follows [1] :
- Infanticide (until the 4th century A.D. ) - characterized by the massacre of children and violence against them
- Casting / withdrawn (IV - XIII centuries) - characterized by the rejection of infanticide due to the spread of Christianity and the practice of parents transferring their children to third parties for upbringing
- Ambivalent (XIV - XVII century) - characterized by the beginning of crowding out the practice of physical punishment
- Obsessive / compulsory (XVIII century) - characterized by the beginning of understanding the needs of the child
- Socializing (XIX - the first half of the XX century) - characterized by the massive spread of pedagogical knowledge, as well as primary and secondary education
- Helping (from the middle of the 20th century) - characterized by the individualization of the upbringing process, the rejection of physical punishment and equal relations between parents and children
DeMos also drew attention to the role of fetal experience, that is, psychological trauma of a person in the state of the embryo in the womb of the mother. According to deMos, fetal injuries occur when the embryo is uncomfortable with a lack of nutrition or from mother's smoking or alcoholism. Since the embryo is not able to respond to the annoying reaction, fetal injuries remain in the human psyche and in adulthood, however, due to the fact that they are hidden in the very depths of the psyche, their manifestation is unconscious and implicit in nature [2] .
DeMos connects the problem of the genesis and spread of Islamic terrorism with the peculiarities of family relations and upbringing in many Muslim countries [3] .
DeMos is the founder of the Institute of Psychohistory and The Journal of Psychohistory .
