Daniel Handler ( February 28, 1970 ) is an American writer and screenwriter, also known by the pseudonym Lemony Snicket , the author of a series of children's books " 33 misfortunes ."

Personal life

Handler was born in 1970 in San Francisco , California . In 1992 he graduated from Wesleyan University . He is married to Lisa Brown and has a son, Otto. Now lives with his family in San Francisco in an old Victorian house. He plays the accordion , performed in several musical groups.

Literary activity

Handler's first novel, The Basic Eight , was refused by many publishers because of its content (a pessimistic view of the life of a teenage girl). According to Handler himself, he received 37 rejections from publishers before being able to publish the novel.

In 1999, Handler, under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket, began writing a series of children's books " 33 misfortunes " ( Eng. A Series of Unfortunate Events ). The books of the series tell of three orphaned children, on whom all sorts of misfortunes and hardships literally fall down. The first book in the series, The Bad Start, was published in 1999. A series of “33 misfortunes” has gained immense popularity and has become a worldwide bestseller . The last book of the series, entitled “The End!” And published on Friday October 13, 2006, has been translated into 41 languages ​​and sold over a total circulation of over 60 million copies [4] .

In 2004, the film version of the first three books of the series was released - the feature film “ Lemony Snicket: 33 Misfortunes ”.

Based on the book series, in 2004 the computer game Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events was also released.

In November 2014, Netflix, together with Paramount Television, announced plans to adapt the 33 misfortunes series of children's books to the original television series, with book author Daniel Handler as an executive producer.

In September 2015, it became known that Barry Sonnenfeld and Mark Hoodis agreed to stand at the helm of production of the series. Hoodis became a showrunner and screenwriter, and Sonnenfeld became a director; in addition, they both received the posts of executive producers. Nevertheless, in January 2016, it became known that Hudis left the project, but the name of the new showrunner was not named then.

In March 2016, it was announced that the series would consist of eight episodes. In September 2016, Harris announced that the events of each book of the cycle will be reflected in two episodes; in this way the first four books will be filmed. In total, the series will have three seasons [5] .
