Biography

Maredid was the son of Owain ap Edwin ( Wall Owain ab Edwin ) and the grandson of Edwin Ap Einion . When Grifid ap Llywelyn was killed in 1063, he seized the throne of Deheubart in 1055 from the son of Grifid ap ap Riederch , the throne was seized by Maredid ap Owain ap Edwin, returning Deheibart under the rule of the Dinevour dynasty [2] .

The reign of Maredid marked the beginning of the Norman conquest of England . After several attempts to resist the conquerors in the south-east of Wales , Maredid up Owain up Edwin decided not to resist the invasion of the Normans . For providing the possibility of passage to Gwentu , Maredid in 1070 was awarded lands in England.

Wales in the X — XI centuries

After establishing their power in England, the Normans began forming the Welsh brand . One of the most ardent figures involved in this process was Count Hereford William Fitz-Osburn . Already by the beginning of the 1070s , Fitz-Osburn had subdued the whole of Gwent , and there were clashes with the rulers of Deheibarth and Morgannug.

Caradog ap Griffid , son of Griffides ap Riederch , who ruled Debeybart before Griffith ap Llywelyn , retained claims to the throne occupied by Meredides [3] . And in 1072 , taking advantage of the fact that after the defeat from Fitz-Osbern, the forces of Deheybart were weakened, the Caradog ap Grifid, led by a united Norman and Welsh detachment, attacked the kingdom. In a clash with them on the river Rimney ( vally . Rhymni ) [4] Maredid ap Owain ap Edwin was killed, but Deheybart remained under the control of the house of Dinevur, as he was inherited by Maredid's brother - Rice ap Owain .

Maredid had a son, Grifid ap Maredid, who lived in his father's lands in England. The Grifid was killed a few years later, during an attempt to regain the Deheibart of the Dinevour dynasty.
