Geography and Economics
The city of Mariental is located in the central part of southern Namibia, on the River Fish , 274 kilometers southeast of the country's capital Windhoek , on the traditional territory of the Nama people. The administrative center of the Hardap region, as well as the district of the same name with the city. The population is 15.500 people (as of 2010 ). Marienthal was founded on December 24, 1894 by German Lutheran missionaries. In 1912, a railway passed through it, and in 1920 Marienthal received city status.
The climate in the Marienthal area is hot, arid. Hardap dam , built in 1963 on the Fish River, 20 kilometers north of the city, forms an artificial lake with an area of ββ25 kmΒ². Around the lake there is a recreation area Hardap adapted for water sports. To the north of the city are large ostrich farms; Astrakhan sheep are also raised in the vicinity of Marienthal, wine-growing, vegetables and fruits are grown.
Marienthal lies on the trans-Namibian railway connecting Windhoek and Keetmanshoop .
In 2006 , as a result of dam damage, the city was heavily flooded.
