Practice What You Preach presents more serious lyrics than the previous two - in particular, problems of society , politics , freedom of choice, lies , betrayal [1] . The title song of the Practice What You Preach album became a hit, and the video clip of the same name was repeatedly broadcast on MTV (as well as The Ballad) [2] . Despite the complexity of the compositions, the album was recorded live in Berkeley (California) [3] , and not in the studio, as usual. By June 1992, the album had sold 450,000 copies in the United States [4] , although it was not certified gold even by 2019. According to setlist.fm, the title track has been played at concerts more than 700 times [5] . Only Confusion Fusion, an instrumental composition, has never been played live.
The feedback on Practice What You Preach was generally favorable. Allmusic's Alex Henderson awarded the album three out of five stars, and in the review he claims that Testament “focuses more on subjects such as freedom of choice, political corruption, hypocrisy and the consequences of greed and greed” and that their “musical approach is almost the same the most - under the direction of metal producer Alex Perielas " [1] . Practice What You Preach entered the American charts a month after the release and reached 77 positions, remaining in the charts for 12 weeks [6] .
Testament toured in support of the album for less than a year. They embarked on a one-month US tour in October 1989 with Annihilator and Wrathchild America (who had just released their debut albums), and played two shows in California with Nuclear Assault and Voivod in December. The second leg of the tour began in January 1990, when Testament supported Mortal Sin in Germany and the UK with Xentrix. [7] After their first visit to Japan in February, Testament embarked on a two-month tour in the US with Savatage , in which they participated as support for Nuclear Assault , Dead Horse and Dark Angel . The tour ended in May 1990, after which the band began recording their next album, Souls of Black .
