History
The Church of Saint-Etienne, built in the XII century , replaced the Carolingian Church of the IX century , which in turn was built on the foundation of the Roman temple of Diana , built in the V century .
The cathedral was significantly damaged during the French Revolution ( 1793 ). The church was the department of the bishop of the diocese of Agde, which in 1801 was annexed to the diocese of Montpellier . During the construction of the church, black basalt was used , which was mined in the nearby volcanic quarries of Mont Saint-Loup.
