History
The city is surrounded by the Tigris in the north, east and south, therefore its name means "island" in Arabic (جزيرة, Jazīra) and Syriac (ܓܙܝܪܐ , Gzirā). In Syriac manuscripts it is known as Ghazarta (ܓܙܪܬܐ), which also means "island". During the early Iron Age, the city was located in the kingdom of Kummi , north of Assyria . In classical antiquity, he was in Korduyen (Kardu). Subsequently, the city was part of different states, for a long time there was the residence of the Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East ; in the XVI century, he fell into the Ottoman Empire .
In March 2016, the Turkish army conducted a military operation in the city, in which it killed more than 100 armed people from the Kurdish Workers Party [1] .
