Story

The film begins with an audio recording of the call to service 9-1-1 , where a boy in hysterics tells the operator that he and a friend found two dead bodies in blood in a country house.

On the night of February 11-12, 2005, Kristen McKay ( Liv Tyler ) and James Hoyt ( Scott Speedman ) return home after a summer holiday and a party dedicated to the engagement of their friends. James makes Kristen an offer to get married, but the woman refuses the man, considering that she is not ready for such changes. James takes his beloved to the remote home of his father, which is located outside the city. Suddenly a girl knocks on the door ( Gemma Ward ) and asks “is Tamara home”. Kristen seems that the girl is behaving strangely, and thinks that she needed help. However, the girl leaves when she is informed that she was mistaken about home.

James goes to the store for cigarettes, calling a friend to pick him up as soon as he wakes up. Left alone, Kristen hears someone start knocking furiously at the door. She puts on charging her mobile phone, calls from the landline phone to James and asks him to hurry. Then in the background it shows how a Masked Man ( Kip Wicks ) passes into the house behind Kristen. The girl pushes the window curtain back and sees another stranger - Pupa ( Word ). The doors and windows continue to frantically beat. She hides in the bedroom and inadvertently hurts her hand lamp. When James returns, Kristen tells what happened. Together they check the house and make sure that nobody is there. Meanwhile, Kristen's mobile phone is found burnt in the fireplace.

James hurries to the car, in which the windshield is broken and the wheels are lowered, behind his phone, but he does not find it, and masked people are advancing on him from both sides. He runs back to the house and when the door starts to be smashed with an ax, he and Kristen block the door of the piano. James pulls out a shotgun and they hide in a room waiting. Meanwhile, James’s friend, Mike, arrives at the house, and James accidentally shoots him. Then James decides to run to the barn in front of the house where the old radio was supposed to stay, with which you can contact the police. He crawls there, but stumbles upon a stranger. Kristen then hurries to the barn, but another stranger destroys the radio equipment - Pretty Woman ( Laura Margulis ).

Returning to the house, Kristen tries to hide from the killers, but eventually she is caught. She and James are tied to chairs, and when Kristen, crying, asks why they are with them so, Dolly replies: " Because you were at home ." After removing the mask (faces are not shown), the Beauty and the Man in the Mask are stabbed to the stomach with a knife to James, after which the Pupa takes the knife and Kristen beats them in the same way. After some time, Kristen, lying on the floor, comes to his senses and hears a mobile phone ringing in the pocket of Mike's corpse. She crawls to him, but when she takes the phone, the call is already dropped. Then a Masked Man appears, Kristen closes his hands in horror, but he just breaks up his mobile phone and leaves [K 1] .

In the morning, two Mormon preachers drive up to the house on a bicycle. They meet the car with strangers. The doll wants to buy a brochure from the boys, and one of them asks her: “ Do you sin? "" Sometimes, "she answers. Pretty woman says that "next time it will be easier." Then the guys open the broken door of the house and enter the room where the bodies of James, Mike and Kristen lie in the corridor. One of the boys is leaning over Kristen, and she suddenly abruptly grabs his arm and comes in a cry.

Production

The plot of Brian Bertino came up with the impression of the murder of actress Sharon Tate , who, together with her friends, on August 9, 1969, was brutally murdered by a gang of Charles Manson . Besides the fact that at the time of the murder, Tate was in the eighth and a half months of pregnancy, this crime was terrified by the fact that it was completely unmotivated - Tate and her friends were in no way connected with the Manson gang. Their goal was a man who had previously lived in the house in which Tate now lived.

The second source of inspiration was the story that happened to Bertino in childhood. One evening, when only Bertino and his sister were at home, several people knocked on the door to them who asked about a man who never lived in this house. Having received a negative response strangers left. Later, Bertino learned that they had called all neighboring houses with the same question, and if the house was empty, they would rob it.

The script, entitled The Faces (Persons), became the third scenario written by Bertino in his career.
