In July 2010, a new version of the flag was adopted, in which black and red colors changed places, and instead of the rising sun, the already risen one is depicted. The authorities of Malawi believed that this should have been a reflection of the progress that the country had made after gaining independence from Britain. However, in 2012, in connection with the protests of the residents, the previous version of the flag was returned.
