Giuseppe Alberigo ( Italian: Giuseppe Alberigo ; January 21, 1926 , Varese - June 15, 2007 , Bologna ) is a modern Italian historian , one of the leading experts on the history of the Catholic Church and the Second Vatican Cathedral . One of the leading representatives of the so-called Bologna school .

Biography
Giuseppe Alberigo was born on January 21, 1926 in Varez , in the very north of Italy.
In 1948 he received his doctorate at the Catholic University of Milan (Doctor of Law), worked as an assistant at the “Documentation Center” in Bologna . Conducted research on law and church history . In 1951, Alberigo was appointed professor at the University of Modena . From 1954 to 1967 he worked at the University of Florence .
In 1962, Giuseppe Alberigo became the head of the Institute for Religious Studies in Bologna , and in 1967 was appointed as a professor of church history. His research on the history of the Council of Trent on which he worked during his two-year research stay in Bonn dates back to the same time.
In 1999, Giuseppe Alberigo was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of the Department of Catholic Theology at the University of Westphalia in Münster .
For a long time, Giuseppe Alberigo, together with Hans Küng and Karl Raner, was a member of the editorial board of the theological journal “Concilium”.
He died on June 15, 2007 in Bologna.
Scientific activity
Alberigo is known throughout the scientific world for his research on the history of the Second Vatican Council , in particular, the five-volume work on this cathedral (Storia del concilio Vaticano II), published in 1995-2001 and translated into many languages, including including Russian .
Alberigo also wrote several studies on the activities of Pope John XXIII . He was the author and editor of many other books and essays.
Rewards
Cavalier of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit for the Italian Republic . Awarded on April 18, 2007 at the initiative of the President of Italy .
