Asian Champion among youths ( 1977 ). Since 1982, playing for the UK team. The best results in the national championships: 1983 - 2nd, 1984 - 2nd – 4th; 1986 - 1-3 places. He participated in the 10th World Chess Olympiads, 4 times for the team of New Zealand ( 1976 - 1980 , 2008 ) and 6 for the team of England (1982 - 1992 ). As part of a team of selected chess players of the world, a participant in a match with Soviet chess players (1984) played a draw with O. Romanishin and M. Tal on the 2nd reserve board.

The best results in other international competitions: London (1976 and 1987 ) - 1-2nd, 1979 and 1980 - 1-3rd, 1984 and 1986 - 2-3rd, 1985 - 2-5th; Manchester ( 1979 ) and New York (1980) - 1-2; Dortmund (1980 and 1983) - 2nd and 2nd – 3rd; Brighton (1980) and Zalaegerszeg ( 1981 ) - 1-2; Brighton and Chester (1981) - 1st; Minsk (1982) - 4-6th; Jurmala (1983) - 2nd; Amsterdam (1983, 1984 and 1987) - 1-2nd, 3rd and 2-4th; Hong Kong ( Hong Kong , 1984) - 1-2; Lugano (1985) - 2-5th; Hastings (1986/1987) - 1-4th; Bill (1987) - 4-5th place. In the championship of the countries of the Commonwealth (British) (1985) - 3–6 places. In 1986 he won the match against J. Rogers - 3: 1.

The author of several books on the theory of openings, together with A. Miles, published a book on the interzonal tournament in Rio de Janeiro (1979).
