Sir Mekere Morauta ( 1946 ) is a politician in Papua New Guinea . In the period from 1999 to 2002, he served as Prime Minister of the country. He is currently the opposition leader and parliamentary representative for Port Moresby . Until recently, he was chairman of the National Capital District Commission.

Morauta was born in 1946 at Kukipi, a coastal village located east of the town of Kerema in the Gulf province. He received his primary education at a local school, then studied at the secondary schools of Kerema and Sogeri. After graduation, he entered the University of Papua New Guinea , where in 1970 he received a bachelor's degree in economics [1] . In addition, an exchange internship at Flinders University , located in South Australia .
After graduating, he worked as an economist in public and private institutions. In 1975, he became the first native of Papua New Guinea to be appointed Secretary of the Department of Finance (he remained until 1982 ). Other positions held by Morauta include the Governor of a government-owned commercial bank, the Joint-Stock Bank of Papua New Guinea (from 1983 to 1992 ), and the Governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea ( 1993 to 1994 ). In July 1997, Morauta was elected to the national parliament [1] .
On July 14, 1999, he was elected the new Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, having removed William Skate and received the support of 99 members of parliament (five voted against) [2] . Shortly after the election, on July 21 , Morata declared the actions of his predecessor to establish diplomatic relations with Taiwan null and void [3] . On August 5, 2002, he was forced to resign, giving way to Michael Somara .
In 1990, Morauta received the title of knight-bachelor , and in 2009 on his birthday he was awarded the Order of St. Michael and St. George , receiving the title of knight-commander [4] .
Mekere was a member of the so-called “gang of four,” a group of influential young public servants who played a key role in the country's life and policymaking (other members of the group were Charles Lepani, Rabbi Nmaliu and Anthony Siaguru).
During the 2007 general election , Morauta was re-elected to Parliament, where he supported Julius Chan as Prime Minister [5] . Nevertheless , Michael Somare was re-elected as the new Prime Minister on August 13, 2007 . Morauta, however, a few days later became an opposition leader.
During his premiership, Morauta was the leader of the People's Democratic Movement . However, after Somare became the country's prime minister in 2002, serious disagreements arose within the party. The original leader of the movement, Paías Wingti, became the new leader of the party, and Morata formed his own party, the Papua New Guinea Party , which won 8 seats in parliament in the 2007 elections.
Mekere is married to Roslyn Morauta, has two sons from a previous marriage.
