Atletico Madrid

De Gea as part of Atlético

David de Gea is a graduate of Madrid's Atletico Canter . On September 30, 2009, the young goalkeeper (de Gea at that time was 18 years old) made his debut in the main club; his debut fell on the Champions League group match with the Portuguese “ Porto ” [3] and was forced to: Roberto , the second goalkeeper of Atlético, who started the match as the main goalkeeper, was injured and could not continue the match (the main goalkeeper of the club, Sergio Asenjo in this time in the national team took part in the youth world championship ). Despite the fact that Atlético lost 0-2, the game of the young goalkeeper made the most favorable impression that de Gea managed to consolidate after his debut in Example (in this match Atlético defeated Zaragoza 2-1 at home; a considerable merit in this victory belongs to de Gea, with a score of 1: 0, reflecting a penalty kick into his own net). The then coach of the club Abel Resino , himself in the past defending the goal of “Atletico”, gave a very high assessment of the game de Gea, especially noting the endurance and composure of the young goalkeeper [4] . After such a confident debut, David de Gea, who began the season as the third goalkeeper of Atlético, entrenched as the club's main goalkeeper.

The confident play of the young goalkeeper was largely the key to Atlético’s success in the 2009/10 season: the Madrid club reached the final of the Royal Cup and became the first winner of the Europa League , having won the first European club trophy after a 48-year hiatus. It is not surprising that the grandees of European football became interested in David de Gea [5] . To keep the goalkeeper in the club, the management of “Atletico” hastened to conclude a new contract with de Gea until 2013 [6] [7] .

Manchester United

Transfer

Since the beginning of 2011, the British press has been actively discussing the topic of potential replacement for Edwin van der Sar, who ends his career, with the position of goalkeeper of Manchester United . Among other surnames, the young Spaniard de Gea was often called [8] . Immediately after the farewell match of Gary Neville against Juventus , United head coach Sir Alex Ferguson announced that an agreement had been reached with de Gea and David would move to Old Trafford , but this information was later refuted by de Gea representatives and the directors of Atlético . who stated that de Gea would not consider proposals to move before the end of the European Youth Championship [9] . Immediately after the Spanish youth team won the championship, de Gea flew to Manchester to undergo a medical examination, and the next day he signed a five-year contract with the “ Red Devils ” [10] .

Season 2011/12

De Gea held his first United game on July 23, 2011, in a club preseason tour against the Chicago Fire . On August 7, he played his first official match for the club in a meeting of the English Super Cup against Manchester City . In the first half, de Gea missed twice: first, Joleon Lescott, after a pass by David Silva, sent the ball into the goal net of the Spaniard, and then scored with a distant shot Edin Dzeko . After the break, United with the goal of Chris Smalling and the “double” Nani managed to beat the City 3–2 and won the Super Bowl [11] . In the Premier League, de Gea made his debut in a match against West Bromwich Albion on August 14, having conceded a ball into the far corner of his goal after being hit by Shane Long ; the meeting ended in victory for United with a score of 2: 1 [12] . On August 22, the Spanish goalkeeper held his first “dry match” at Old Trafford in a game against Tottenham Hotspur [13] . On August 28, in a match against Arsenal , de Gea was able to take the penalty kick that Robin van Persie struck; the match ended with the victory of United with a score of 8: 2 [14] .

On September 18, in a match against Chelsea , de Gea was noted for impressive defensive actions, including saves after strikes by Ramirez and Fernando Torres [15] . In the next match against Stoke City , the Spaniard again made several first-class saves and helped his team draw the match in a draw [16] . On September 27, de Gea made his UEFA Champions League debut in a match against Basel at Old Trafford . The game ended in a draw with a score of 3: 3 [17] . On October 23, de Gea missed 6 goals in their own match in the match against Manchester City [18] . In January 2012, it became known that de Gea was suffering from farsightedness , but this did not seriously affect his game. According to some reports, in the summer of 2012 he was supposed to have a corrective eye operation [19] . On December 31, in a match against Blackburn , de Gea made at least two mistakes that led to goals, due to which United was defeated with a score of 2: 3 [20] . After this match, de Gea lost his place in the starting lineup, and his place in the gate took Danes Anders Lindegor . However, Lindegor was subsequently injured and de Gea returned to the starting lineup. On March 8, 2012, de Gea held one of the best matches of the season, making several first-class saves in the match against Athletic Bilbao , in which United lost 2–3 [21] . De Gea finished the 2011/12 season with the best save rate among the Premier League goalkeepers in relation to the shots delivered on target of his goal - 77.9% [22] .

2012/13 Season

In connection with de Gea’s participation in the Summer Olympics, he missed the Manchester United preseason tour, but was included in the starting lineup for the season opening game against Everton . Despite several “terrific” saves by de Gea, United lost in this meeting with a score of 1: 0 [23] .

On December 9, 2012, in a principled Manchester derby, De Gea made two crucial saves after hitting Carlos Tevez and David Silva . The match ended with the victory of United with a score of 3: 2 [24] . On February 13, 2013, the Spanish goalkeeper saved the goal several times in the Champions League match against Real Madrid, which ended 1-1 [25] , for which he received praise from Sir Alex Ferguson [26] .

From February 23 to March 16, he held three dry matches in a row: they were victories over the Queens Park Rangers 2-0 [27] , over Norwich City 4-0 0 [28] and over Reading with a score of 1: 0 [29] .

According to the results of the 2012/13 season , Manchester United became the champion of the Premier League, and de Gea fell into the symbolic “team of the year” according to the PFA [30] .

Season 2013/14

The 2013/14 season began for De Gea with a “dry” match against Wigan Athletic in the English Super Cup [31] . On October 5, 2013, in a match against Sunderland , David beat off a header from Emanuele Giaccherini : former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel described this save as one of the best he saw in the Premier League [32] . Team head coach David Moyes agreed with Schmeichel’s assessment, adding that this save by the Spanish goalkeeper was a turning point in the game [33] and that De Gea is “constantly improving” [34] .

On December 1, De Gea held his 100th official game for Manchester United in a match against Tottenham Hotspur [35] . On March 19, 2014, in a UEFA Champions League match against the Greek Olympiacos , De Gea saved United twice in a row, repulsing attacks from close range by David Fuster and Alejandro Dominguez , according to commentators, "ignoring all the known laws of physics and physiology" by amazing "match [36] . David's teammate Phil Jones said that he considers De Gea “one of the best goalkeepers in the world” [37] . In May 2014, the Spanish goalkeeper was recognized as the best player of the season according to players and according to fans of Manchester United [38] .

Season 2014/15

Now we see a huge improvement in his game. He wins match after match for United. He became a terrific goalkeeper.
- Gary Neville about David de Gea in 2014 [39]

Before this match, Baines broke the penalty spot in the Premier League 14 times and realized all of them [40] . For his confident play in the match, de Gea was praised by commentators, players and the head coach [41] , and was also recognized as a player in the match by fans [42] .

On December 14, 2014, David was recognized as a player of the match for his “excellent game” in the derby against Liverpool [44] , having made eight saves in the match, while United won 3-0 [45] . At the end of the season, David was nominated for the title of player of the year according to the players and the young player of the year , but the awards went to Eden Hazard and Harry Kane, respectively [48] [49] [50] . Season 2015/16

On August 7, 2015, Manchester United head coach Louis van Gaal said that de Gea was “not ready to play” and would not be included in the application for the Premier League opening round match against Tottenham because of the uncertainty about his future (in the press Rumors about his transfer to Real Madrid were actively discussed) [55] . In August, the Spanish goalkeeper never entered the United's bid for matches: Argentine Sergio Romero took his place in the goal, and Sam Johnston was on the bench. On August 31, Manchester United reached an agreement on the transfer of de Gea to Real Madrid for £ 29 million, part of the deal was also the transfer of Keylor Navas to United. However, the deal fell through due to the fact that all the necessary documents for the transfer could not be obtained before the closing of the transfer window in Spain [56] .

On September 11, 2015, David de Gea extended his contract with Manchester United until 2019. [57] After that, he returned to the starting lineup of Manchester United, playing his first official derby match against Liverpool on September 12 [58] .

De Gea at the European Youth Championship

David de Gea played for the youth teams of Spain of all ages, as part of the youth team under 17 years old becoming the European champion and silver medalist of the World Cup . The confident debut of the young goalkeeper as the main goalkeeper of his club naturally attracted the attention of the coaches of the main national team : the head coach of the “ red fury ” Vicente del Bosque included de Gea in the extended list of candidates for a trip to the World Cup in South Africa [67] . However, David de Gea was not on the final list of the national team [68] .

In 2011, de Gea as part of the youth national team of Spain won the European Youth Championship . In 2012, he took part in the Olympic Games in London , where the Spanish national team took last place in the group stage without winning a single meeting. On May 21, 2018, de Gea was called up to the national team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia [72] . In the first game of the Spanish national team at the tournament de Gea missed three goals from the Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo , having made a mistake in the moment with the second goal conceded [73] .
