The main runway of the airport is oriented perpendicular to the direction of the Canterbury hairdryer Nor'wester . The second strip is oriented parallel to the direction of the hair dryer at an angle of 90 degrees to the main runway and is used during the operation of the wind to service aircraft up to the Boeing 767 class.
Currently, the airport is constructing a new building for the passenger terminal for domestic air transportation. The project cost is more than 200 million US dollars , the main phase of construction is expected to be completed in 2011, but some stages of the demolition of the old building will continue until the end of 2012 [2] .
History
Christchurch Airport dates back to 1936 with the organization in the suburban area of Harwood Airfield . In 1946, the first hangars for light aircraft, a water tower, several service buildings and a small passenger terminal building were built at the airport. In the early 1950s, two runways and two parallel taxiways were built, and in 1960 a new passenger terminal was commissioned. From this moment on, the airport has observed almost constant improvement of infrastructure facilities, the introduction of new facilities, the expansion of car parks, runways, taxiways and the addition of new telescopic ladders in the landing area of the international and internal parts of the terminal.
- 1937 - the first runway and passenger terminal were built with an area of 60 square meters;
- 1962 - the length of the main runway was increased to 2442 meters for the reception of jet passenger aircraft;
- 1966 - the wing of international transportation of the passenger terminal building was commissioned;
- 1975 - the area of domestic airlines of the passenger terminal was expanded, the total area was 16 thousand square meters;
- 1984 - the length of the main runway increased by 845 meters to 3287 meters;
- 1987 - the area of the passenger terminal is increased. Separate areas of the terminal's domestic air transportation sector are allocated for servicing Ansett New Zealand and Air New Zealand flights;
- 1988 - a new international terminal with an area of 28 thousand square meters was commissioned;
- 2004 - five new sectors and four new telescopic gangways in the passenger exit area were commissioned at the international terminal [3] .
Airport Reconstruction
Currently, Christchurch International Airport is in full swing of reconstruction and expansion of the entire airport infrastructure. The implementation of the construction plan began in 2006 with the erection of a new multi-storey building with a covered parking lot for 570 cars, which was commissioned at the beginning of next year. Immediately after the delivery of the parking lot, the former parking area was closed for the construction of the terminal building. In October 2009, the 45-meter air traffic control tower was opened.
At the beginning of 2009, work began on a new passenger terminal, which, after putting it into operation, will replace the obsolete domestic airline terminal and significantly expand the infrastructure of the international passenger terminal. According to the master plan, the new terminal will include the following facilities:
- common hall for registration of domestic and international flights;
- a large area of retail, bars, cafes and restaurants;
- new departure and arrival halls for domestic flights;
- a new large baggage claim area for domestic and international flights;
- customs control sector in the area of arrival of international flights;
- new taxiways to the terminal ramps and to the aircraft parking lots in order to more efficient traffic of aircraft through the airport;
- the former domestic airline terminal will be completely dismantled in order to free up space for the terminal being built. All stages of construction should be completed in mid-2011, with the exception of some demolition works of the previous structures, which are planned to be completed in 2012 [4] .
