Puri

Puri ( lat.Vitex lucens ) - a plant; a species of the genus Vitex of the family Iasnatkovye , endemic of New Zealand , was opened to Europeans by the team of J. Cook in 1769 , but for a long time it was practically not studied. Classified by A. Cunningham only in 1826 [2]

Botanical Description

Puri is an evergreen tree 12–20 m high and a trunk diameter of 50–150 cm with a light brown scaly bark .

Leaves are opposite, ellipsoidal , dark green, up to 12 cm long.

Inflorescence is a panicle with 10-15 red flowers. The diameter of the flowers is 2.5-4 cm [3] [4] .

Distribution and habitat

In nature, puri grows in separate populations on the North Island north of 39 ° S. sh., more common in the Waikato region. It mainly grows to an altitude of 800 m above sea level [5] . It is also found on Motutapu Island and small islands near the North Island.

Economic Significance and Application

Fruits and nectar of flowers used by birds and insects .

Previously, the Maori used puri tinctures as an anesthetic and when washing the bodies of the dead. Puriree tree planting was discovered in Maori burial sites [6] .
