The early years

At the age of five, Philip Lam began to train at the local football school Gern, where his father, a fan of playing football, and where his friend from kindergarten took him. At 11, Philip became a player in the famous Bavarian Academy [4] . Ian Pinta, coach of the children's department, spotted a talented guy in training in Gern. Pinta came several times to look at Lama, and each time his position, which was that the player had to be taken, was strengthened. Soon, Philip became a player in Bavaria. Each coach through whom Lam passed said that a wonderful football player would grow out of him. An example is the words of one of the coaches who worked with Lam, Herman Hummels, who said: “If Philip Lam does not play in the Bundesliga, then no one else will do it.” Philip twice won the youth Bundesliga in 2001 and in 2002. [4] For the first time, the Bayer youth team was defeated with a score of 3: 2, the Stuttgart team was defeated in a score of 4-0, and Philip was the captain of the Bavarian team for the second time, and Bastian Schweinsteiger stood out among his partners, Andreas Ottl , Christian Lell , Michael Rensing and Peter Trochowski . [four]

Club career

Bavaria II, Bavaria debut

At 17, in 2001, Lahm became a player in Bavaria II . Her then-coach, German Gerland, still believes that Lam is the most talented player he has ever coached. Philip made his debut for Bayern II on August 25, 2001 in the fifth round of the Regional League (South) in a match against Wacker from Burghausen . The match ended with the score 2: 1 in favor of the Munich team, in the 24th minute Munich's live legend distinguished himself - Hans Pflyugler , the 1990 world champion, who returned to football for one season, and on the 85th the future famous Bundesliga player - Zvezdan Misimovich distinguished himself. Philip himself spent the whole match on the field. [5] It is interesting that in the application for the championship Lam was listed as a midfielder , and the season was already ending on the spot of the defender. In total that season he spent 27 matches and scored two goals: one on December 1 to Darmstadt [6] , and the second on April 7, 2002 for Borussia from Fulda [7] . In the second season, Lam was already a captain, he played 34 matches and scored one goal against Borussia from Neunkirchen [8] , and the team finished the championship in a high 4th place.

Philip quickly got a note on Ottmar Hitzfeld , who coached the main team of the Munich team. Otmar saw in the player the qualities necessary for the player's basics and Lam was the first of the young players preparing for the main team. [4] And on November 13, 2002, Lahm first appeared on the field wearing a Bayern T-shirt. For his debut, a match was chosen against the French Lance in the Champions League of that season. Philip appeared on the field at the end of the match, in the 90th minute, replacing Marcus Foylner . For Bavaria that match didn’t mean anything - the group tournament was completely failed by them, they came up to the match with the French with one point taken from the orange in the first match, and the goal difference was 6:10. As a result, the match ended with the score 3: 3, Nico Kovacs scored against Bayern in the 6th minute, the goalkeeper of the French organized Varmuyz on the 20th goal, and Foilner scored on the 87th, replaced almost immediately after the goal by Philip. [9]

During youthful football, Philip could play as a defensive midfielder, right-back or midfielder. [10] The most important thing for him was to play on the flank. During the game for Bayern 2, Lahm became a typical flank defender, constantly fleeing the attack. Since at that time Willy Sagnole occupied the right flank of defense in Bavaria and the ageless Bixan Lizarazu occupied the left, Philip had to leave the club and go to Stuttgart, since he had no chance to play in the basis of Bavaria.

Stuttgart

In the summer of 2003, Lam was rented by Stuttgart for 2 years. At first, they counted on him as the successor of the right-back, Andreas Hinkel , but Felix Magat , who trained Stuttgart then, decided to try Lama in other positions so as not to ruin his talent. As a result, Philip soon replaced the left back defender Heiko Gerber from the main squad

The debut at Stuttgart took place on August 3, 2003 in the first round of the Bundesliga . Then, “Stuttgart” played in Rostock against the local “ Hansa ”. Philip entered the field in the 76th minute, replacing midfielder Silvio Meissner. Philip came on as a substitute, in the sixth round, on September 20 in a match with Dortmund Borussia , he came out at the base. That match ended in a 1-0 victory for Stuttgart, thanks to a goal by Kevin Kuranyi in the 67th minute of the match, and it was in this match that Lam won a place in the base. [11] And on October 1, 2003, Lam made his debut in the first team of Stuttgart in the Champions League . The swabs sensationally won that match against Manchester United with a score of 2: 1 thanks to goals from Kuranyi and Sobich, Lam showed an excellent game and was replaced in the 71st minute by the former base player Heiko Gerber. [12] That season in the Bundesliga, Philip played 31 games and scored 1 goal, and spent seven fights in the Champions League. And the award that season was the second best player in the German Championship after Ailton . [four]

The second season at Stuttgart turned out to be difficult for Lam. After the 2004 European Championship , in which he took part, he did not have enough time to recover. In addition, the coach changed for the Reds: Matthias Zammer , who did not really like Philip and did not fall under tactics and team building, became a new mentor. Yet Lam managed to play 16 matches before the Christmas break, of which in fourteen he came out at the base. To end the season, Philip Lamu was prevented by a fracture of his right leg, received in January 2005. [4] Thus, Lam only returned to the field on April 9, 2005 in the match against Schalke 04 , which ended with the Swabians 3-0. But just five weeks later, on May 17, Lam tore the cruciate ligaments. So ended his career at Stuttgart.

Bayern

Lam as part of Bavaria

In July 2005, Philip returned to Bayern, but could not play for her, as he did not manage to recover from a serious injury. After going to the doctors for about two months, Lam slowly began to return to the rhythm of the game, he attended training, working on restoring his body, and played for the second team of Bavaria. The first match in the Bundesliga was played on November 19, 2005 against Arminia from Bielefeld . The fight ended with a victory of Munich with a score of 2: 1, Philip in the 64th minute replaced Bixant Lizarazu [13] . At the end of the season, Bixan completed his professional football career and the place for the future hero of Munich was vacated.

Philippe Lam was one of the most expensive defenders of Bavaria and the entire Bundesliga. The maximum value of the player reached 35 million euros . For twelve seasons, Lam has been a player on the team’s core team and one of its leaders. After the departure of Mark Van Bommel in 2010, Philip became the captain of the team and remained with him until the end of his career. In this capacity, Lam helped Bavaria win the first Champions League for many years, as well as many national tournaments.

On February 8, 2017, he announced that at the end of the season he would end his football career. He commented on his decision to leave as follows:

“I told the club that I am ending my career. My approach to business involves maximum return on every training session and in matches. Until the end of the season I will withstand this, but I will not be able to do the same later. That's why I decided to leave big football. As for the post of sports director, I had constructive conversations with the leadership of Bavaria. However, I decided that this moment had not yet arrived. It was clear that I could not immediately start working in this post, I need a break. ”

On April 18, 2017, Philip spent his last match in the Champions League , in which Bayern lost to Real Madrid 4: 2 (6: 3 in the sum of two matches) and dropped out of the tournament.

Lam became the first player after Oliver Kahn, who was inducted into the Bayern Hall of Fame. [14] The last match of his career was the match of the last round of the Bundesliga 2016/17 Bayern - Freiburg (4: 1). [fifteen]

Team Career

For ten years he was a member of the German national football team (debuted on February 18, 2004). Euro 2004 participant, bronze medalist of the World Cup in Germany (became the author of the first goal of the tournament), silver medalist of Euro 2008 (despite a poor game, scored a winning goal in the semi-finals of the Turkish national team and brought the German national team to the finals), bronze medalist of the World Cup in South Africa (due to the injury of the current Michael Ballack, he was appointed captain of the national team at the tournament), the bronze medalist of Euro 2012 , was a member of the symbolic teams of each of these tournaments. Lam became the 2014 World Champion as captain of the German national team. Becoming a world champion, he announced the completion of his performances in the international arena [16] . In total, he spent 113 matches for the national team, which is the fifth result in its history.

Personal life

Returning to Germany after the World Cup in South Africa on July 13, Lam the next day married his chosen one, 25-year-old Claudia Schattenberg, whom he had known for about 10 years. The wedding was held in a traditional Bavarian style in the city of Aying, 25 km from Munich. The solemn event was attended by the mayor of the town Johann Eichler. After the official wedding ceremony, Philip and Claudia got married in the pilgrimage church of St. Emmeram near the village kindergarten.

In August 2012, the wife gave the footballer the firstborn, who was named Julian. In August 2017, daughter Lenia was born to Philip and Claudia .

Community Activities

Philip Lam takes part in various social projects. In December 2011, he founded a charity foundation of his own name ( German: Philipp Lahm-Stiftung ), whose goal is to support children in need in Germany and Africa. [17] In addition, the Lama Foundation takes part in the SOS Children's Villages project and other charitable projects. For his charitable work on June 30, 2009, the Lam received the Bayerischer Sportpreis Award . [eighteen]

Lam also takes an active part in various projects to combat intolerance and homophobia in sports. For “a special contribution to strengthening tolerance and combating homophobia in sports, especially in football”, in June 2008, Lamu was awarded the Tolerantia-Preis award from the Berlin anti-discrimination project Maneo together with football player Tanya Walter and President of the German Football Union Theo Zwanziger. In February 2017, after the German Cup match with Wolfsburg, Lam announced his final decision to end his career as a player next summer. It is known that earlier at a meeting of the Supervisory Board of Bavaria, Lam’s candidacy was considered as the most preferred for the position of sports director of Bavaria. However, the football player himself decided not to rush to the beginning of a new career, saying that at present he is not ready for such a decision and while he needs a break. [21]
