Cyclaxyridae - New Zealand Endemic

The list of New Zealand beetles includes all groups of beetles ( Coleoptera ) found in New Zealand [1] .

Introduction

Beetles (Coleoptera) make up one fifth to a quarter of the New Zealand insect fauna. The first collections of local beetles were made by European naturalists, led by Joseph Banks during the first expedition of James Cook in 1769 , and described by Fabricius in 1775 .

Most of the winged insects were discovered between 1880 and 1923 by the entomologist Thomas Broun , who described 4,323 species.

Currently, New Zealand has recorded at least 5,223 native species of beetles. In addition, another 356 species were introduced to the islands. Together (5580) they comprise 1100 genera and 82 families. For comparison: flora - 2500 species, terrestrial vertebrates - 350 species. Given the undescribed forms, the potential fauna of beetles can be up to 10,000 species. The greatest diversity is observed in the families of Curculionidae (1496 species), Staphylinidae (936) and Carabidae (424).

ENDEMICS . The families Eucinetidae , Heteroceridae , Chelonariidae , Bostrichidae , Phycosecidae , Monotomidae , Cucujidae , and Prostomidae have one endemic species on the islands. Three beetle families ( Agapythidae , Cyclaxyridae , Metaxinidae ) are endemic to New Zealand and are not found anywhere else. Three more subfamilies are also endemic - Horelophinae ( Hydrophilidae ), Euderinae ( Bostrichidae ), Agapythinae ( Phloeostichidae ).
