The anthropology of Russians is a complex of hereditarily defined traits characterizing the Russian genotype and phenotype . Most of the anthropological and genetic indicators of Russians are close to European averages [1] .
The history of the research issue
Early descriptions of Russians
In 1654 - 1656, traveler Archdeacon Pavel Aleppsky visited Russia . He left behind a detailed description of the Russian kingdom, the life of local residents.
... in the house of each person, ten or more children with white hair on their heads; because of their great whiteness we called them elders ... ... Know that women in the country of Muscovites are beautiful in face and very pretty; their children are like children of francs, but more blush ... [2]
The descriptions of the Russians were also left by the Austrian Ambassador Sigismund Herberstein [3] , Adam Olearius [4] and others.
It is worth highlighting the works of Academician of the Imperial Academy of Sciences and Arts Johann Gotlib Georgi , who left the first detailed description of the image of the Russian people [5] .
Russian Studies in the 19th Century
The anthropological study of Russians began with the formation of anthropology as an independent science in Russia . The first works, primarily on craniology , in this area belong to A. P. Bogdanov [7] .
The beginning of extensive systematic research was laid by the work of D. N. Anuchin "On the geographical distribution of the growth of the male population of Russia" (1889) [8] . In his work, he used the data obtained during the inspection of persons called up for military service. The next step forward was the monograph of N. Yu. Zograf "Anthropological studies of the male Great Russian population of the Vladimir, Yaroslavl and Kostroma gubernias" (1893) [9] . In it, the author singled out two anthropological types of the Great Russian population — tall, light, mezocophalic, and relatively shorter, brachykephalic, and dark pigmented. Zograf suggested that the second type was formed as a result of the mixing of the Slavs who came from the west with the ancient Finnish-speaking population of the Russian Plain [6] .
Russian Studies in the 20th Century
The study of the anthropology of the Eastern Slavs until the middle of the 20th century was irregular. However, already at that time, extensive scientific material was accumulated, which was used in later works and did not lose its relevance to the present day. Among such works, the works of D. N. Anuchin , E. M. Chepurkovsky , V. V. Bunak , G. F. Debets and N. N. Cheboksarov are distinguished.
In the works of Chepurkovsky, for the first time, the geographical method developed by him [6] was consistently applied. As part of the modern population of the European part of Russia and Ukraine, the author identified the following options that have a clear geographical location: Western Great Russian (Valdai type), Eastern Great Russian (North Pontic or Ryazan type), wide-headed brown-haired , North-Western type (Ilmen type) [10] [ 11] [6] .
The most large-scale anthropological study of the Russian people was carried out in 1955–1959 by the Russian anthropological expedition under the direction of V. V. Bunak [6] . The goal was to identify and describe the main anthropological elements that became part of the Russians, and to study the ways of their formation. Proceeding from these goals, research began to be carried out in the zone of settlement of the ancestors of the Russian people in the XI - XIV centuries , and expeditionary routes proceeded in accordance with the direction of the colonization flows of the Eastern Slavic tribes of the Middle Ages ( Vyatichi , Krivichy , Northerners and Slovenian ). Within five years, about 17 thousand adult men and women were examined in 107 settlements according to an extensive anthropological program [12] .
In 1953 - 1957, the expedition of M.V. Vitova worked in the northern territories of the Russian settlement. The route was developed in accordance with the colonization flows from the Novgorod and Rostov-Suzdal lands. In 80 territorial groups of the Russian North , about 8 thousand Russian men were surveyed. The Finno-Ugric population settled in the contact territories was also studied [13] [6] .
Russian Studies in the 21st Century
At the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries, the development of molecular biology and molecular genetics stimulated gene-geographical studies of the peoples of the world, including Russians [14] [15] [16] .
The processing of data collected by anthropological expeditions continues. So, on the basis of these data, portraits of typical representatives of the Russian people by geographical zones were compiled [17] . Anthropological data are analyzed in conjunction with the gene-geographical, for a more accurate picture [18] .
More than 10,000 DNA samples were collected and analyzed during the gene-geographic expeditions of the 2000-2008 GU MGSC of the RAMS 2000–2008 [19] [18] . In addition, the frequency of occurrence of Russian surnames was investigated, the possibility of using these data together with the gene-geographic ones was determined [20] [18] .
Genogeographic research is currently ongoing.
Physical Anthropology
Generalized anthropological portrait
The Russian population is rather anthropologically homogeneous [12] .
By three anthropological features (head width, nose width, lip thickness), Russian populations do not significantly differ from Western European ones. For the rest of the head and face, they are close to the central European variant, which is characterized by the average size. The group averages either coincide with or deviate from the central West European values, remaining, however, within the limits of fluctuations of the western groups. [21]
For the Russian population is characterized by the absence of an epicanthus . Of the more than 8.5 thousand Russian males surveyed, an epicantus was found in 12 people, moreover, only in its infancy. Epicantus is also rare in the population of Central Europe [22] .
The incidence of the direct nose profile in Russians is 75%, which is higher than the European average (70%) [1] . The incidence of the concave nose profile in Russians is 9%, which is close to the average values for Western and Central Europe (10%) [1] .
The combination of characteristics characteristic of Russian populations (in comparison with the West European central variant) [12] :
- Relatively light pigmentation. The percentage of blond hair is 33%, hair of medium shade is 53.2%, dark hair is 13.8%. Light eyes 45%, light mixed 49.9%, dark 5.1%; Bunak V.V., 1965 , p. 103, 108.
- Average growth of eyebrows and beard;
- Moderate face width;
- The predominance of the average horizontal profile and medium-high drift;
- Smaller forehead inclination and weaker development of the super-eyebrows.
The results of craniological studies also demonstrate extremely high morphological similarities. All local variants appear within the limits of the main single and homogeneous craniological type of Russians [23] [24] .
Such a low level of morphological differentiation within a very wide area occupied by Russians may have the following reasons [25] [26] :
- The absence of serious geographical boundaries in the territory of settlement;
- The distribution of a single language (having dialects, but understandable throughout the territory);
- Lack of social exclusion.
Anthropological zoning
The nature of the geographic variability of anthropological features and their combination made it possible to distinguish among the Russian population a number of local anthropological types, named in accordance with the geographic location.
On the basis of the data collected by the Russian anthropological expedition , the following anthropological types were identified:
- Ilmensk-Belozersky . Head pointer from 78 to 80, a relatively narrow and rather strongly shaped face. A high percentage of bright eyes (from 45 to 57), a significant percentage of light shades of hair (from 29 to 40), a relatively strong growth of the beard and a rather high growth [28] [26] .
- Valdai . It has a high head pointer (82-84), somewhat smaller beard growth, a lower and wider face. The proportion of bright eyes is 50%, hair - about 40% [29] .
- West Upper Volga . Head pointer 81. Close to Ilmen, from which it differs by darker hair color (37% of blond hair), stronger beard growth, more straight back of the nose, lower frequency of the upper eyelid fold [30] .
- East Upper Volga . Compared with Ilmen and Valdai, it is characterized by shorter body length (166 cm), wider face, darker coloring of eyes and hair. The head index is somewhat smaller than that of the Valdai, the proportion of the concave back of the nose is also smaller than that of the Valdai and Ilmen [30] .
- Vologda-Vyatka . Head pointer 82.5. Differs in more light pigmentation. The percentage of light irises (without light-mixed) is 38, the percentage of light hair is 33 [30] .
- Vyatka-Kama . Head pointer 81.5. Compared with Ilmen and Valdai, it is characterized by shorter body length, wider face, darker coloring of eyes and hair. The head index is somewhat smaller than that of the Valdai (81.4), the proportion of the concave back of the nose is also smaller than that of the Valdai and Ilmen [30] .
- Klyazminsky . Head pointer 81.5. The percentage of light iris (without light-mixed) is 38, the percentage of light hair is 33. A characteristic feature of the type is the combination of light brown hair, brown eyes, brachycephaly, straight nose contours and increased growth [30] .
- Central . The head index is 81.3, the percentage of light irises (without light-mixed) is 47, the percentage of light hair is 30. The area is anthropologically homogeneous. The average values of signs in the population of different regions of this territory are very close to the average total type of Russians. The maximum similarity with the western Upper Volga [30] .
- Don Sursky . Head pointer 79.6. Closest to Verneoksky. Don-Sursky is distinguished from other regional types of the south-eastern territory by a lighter eye pigmentation (the frequency of a light iris is 50%) [31] .
- Steppe . The head pointer is 79.3, the percentage of light irises (without light-mixed) is 37 (the minimum is for the south), the percentage of light hair is 20 (the minimum is by regional types). According to the complex of signs, it occupies an intermediate position between the Don-Sur and Medium Volga [31] .
- Srednevolzhsky . The head index is 79.6, the percentage of light irises (without light-mixed) is 42, the percentage of light hair is 21. It has no analogues in the other groups (combination of mesocephaly, small facial size and relatively strong growth of the beard) [31] .
- Verkhneoksky . The head pointer is 81.3, the percentage of light irises (without light-mixed) is 47, the percentage of light hair is 25 [31] .
- Desna Seimensky . The head pointer is 81.3, the percentage of light irises (without light-mixed) is 38, the percentage of light hair is 26 [31] .
- Arkhangelsk . The head pointer is 79, the percentage of light irises (without light-mixed) is 53, the percentage of light hair is 45. It is very close to Ilmen, it has a slightly wider nose, a higher frequency of bright eyes, more intense growth of a beard, a more profiled face in the horizontal plane and less often occurring fold of the upper eyelid [32] [13] .
- Pskov-Poozersky . The head pointer is 81.8, the percentage of light irises (without light-mixed) is 70.5, the percentage of light hair is 34.4 [30] . The type was identified based on population studies on the west coast of Pskov Lake . According to the complex of features, the population of the Pskov Lake District belongs to the Western Baltic type [33] . It reveals similarities with the type of the Baltic tribes of the Yatvyagians , Prussians and Talabs [34] .
On the basis of this classification, larger regions were also identified: the northwest, northeast, southwest, southeast, within each of which a great unity of anthropological types is revealed [35] [24] .
Odontology
The morphogenesis of odontological features is mainly due to genetic factors and weakly depends on the influence of the external environment. Polymorphism of the dental system is widely used in studies of problems of ethnogenesis [36] [37] [38] .

The meanings of the main features of odontology unambiguously characterize the Russians as representatives of the western circle of forms [41] . Odontological indicators of the Russian population are closest to those of the Central European odontological type [41] .
The intergroup differences of characters among Russians are much smaller than between Russians and other peoples, which allows us to speak about the unity of Russians [41] . Nevertheless, on the basis of these differences, two main odontological complexes were identified: the northwestern and southern ones, interconnected by a number of transitional forms [41] . Odontological types in the composition of the Russian people are directly related to the types of Eastern Europe as a whole : Central European and Northern Gracilia [41] . It is revealed that the northwestern type of Russians was formed under the influence of the northern gracile type of Eastern Europe. In particular, the northwestern odontological type of Russians is characterized by a slight increase in the occurrence of spatula incisors, which brings these populations closer to neighboring eastern Latvians , Estonians , Finns , Karelians , Veps, and can be explained by the influence of a common substrate [42] . In general, the incidence of scaphoid incisors characteristic of Mongoloid populations [43] is generally low among Russians [44] .
There were no significant differences between the urban and rural populations of the areas where such studies were conducted [41] .
Dermatoglyphics
It has been shown that dermatoglyphic features are not affected by directional selection and can be used in population studies along with genetic ones [46] [47] .
Russian populations are fairly uniform in terms of skin relief . However, in northern populations, there are features of northern Caucasoids (a reduced delta index is combined with a low percentage of additional interdigital triradius), in the south, a southern European index (a relatively high percentage of additional interdigital triradiuses is combined with a reduced frequency of axial proximal palm triradius in men and relatively high delimets in men and in the case of relatively high deltas in men and δ delta palms, and in relatively large deltas of the palms of the axial proximal palm triradius in men and relatively high deltas are combined with a lower axial proximal palladium triradius in men and relatively high deltas are combined with a lower high axial proximal palm triradius in men and relatively high deltas in men and in the high delimetric palradius of the proximal proximal palm triradius in men and relatively large deltas are combined with a lower frequency of axial proximal palradius in men and relatively large delts. in women) [48] [45] .
The Caucasoid-Mongoloid complex in Russians is usually low and averages 41.9 for men and 44.2 for women [45] .

The allele frequencies of the DRB1 gene in the populations of Eastern Slavs correspond to the typical West Eurasian distribution pattern [92] . The frequency of alleles of DRB1 * 09 and DRB1 * 12 alleles characteristic of Mongoloid populations [92] is low in Russians [90] .
According to the results of a multivariate analysis of the polymorphism of the HLA system in populations of Europe , three clusters are distinguished: North European, Central European, and Southern European. Russians enter the North European Cluster, along with Germans , Danes , Dutch , Finns , Irish, and British [90] [91] .
