History
Initially, the symbol j was used as a variant of the symbol i (for example, the combination ii was written as ij ). Pierre de la Ramet (16th century) was the first to distinguish between the letters I and J. Initially, both of these letters were pronounced as [ i ], [ i ː ], [ j ]. However, sounds appeared in the Romance languages other than the previous sound (except for the Italian language ). So the pronunciation of the letter J in French and in Spanish is very different from the pronunciation of I.
