Askiz length 124 [2] km, catchment area approx. 1800 [2] km². For about 75 km, the river flows through taiga with a river network density of 5-0.7 km / km². The runoff module in this part of the river is 5-10 l / s from one km². In this part, the channel passes in stable bedrock, not subject to erosion. When Askiz enters the steppe, the river meanders, forms a wide (up to 200 m) floodplain, replete with a large number of channels and islands, according to its characteristics (bottom slope, discharge, etc.) it retains the signs of a mountain river. A pronounced peak flood is characteristic. The bed is shallow in depth, during snowmelt and heavy rains, as a rule, water leaves the banks, flooding and flooding farmland and settlements, causing great damage to the economy. Almost all settlements are protected by bunds.
Askiz has more than 10 large tributaries: the Base (the length of the channel is 51 km, the catchment area is 520 km²), Khabzas (30 km, 630 km²), etc.
Since ancient times, there has been irrigation on the shores of Askiz. At present, more than 3 thousand hectares of arable land are irrigated by water from Askiz within the boundaries of the Verkh-Askiz , Pervomaisk, Staro-Askiz engineering irrigation systems.
