The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope or the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope is a telescope located on the top of the Mauna Kea volcano at an altitude of 4204 meters above sea level in the United States , on the island of Hawaii as part of the Mauna Kea Observatory .

Built in 1977 by a non-governmental organization uniting astronomers from Canada , France and the University of Hawaii . At that time, the telescope was the sixth in the world among the largest optical telescopes in the world. The diameter of the telescope is 3.6 meters. It operates in the optical and infrared range.
The first light on the telescope was received on August 6, 1979 . In 1999, astronomer Vladimir Krasnopolsky, using a telescope, received confirmation that there is methane on Mars.
