Biography

Pietro came from a noble Venetian family, who gave the Venetian Republic several doge. His father, Pietro II Candiano , also held this post in 932-939. In 942, Pietro III himself was elected doge of the Venetian people’s assembly.

In 948, Pietro organized a campaign on the Slavs living on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea - Neretva , engaged in piracy and interfered with Venetian trade. However, the fleet of the republic of thirty-three ships, commanded by Urs Badovariy and Peter Rosol , was defeated by the Slavs and was forced to return to Venice. Despite this setback, Pietro III sent a new fleet to the Slavic coast of the Adriatic Sea, which managed to force the rethet to make peace with the Republic of St. Mark. The condition for the reconciliation of long-term enemies was the payment of Venice annual tribute to the Slavic pirates in exchange for security guarantees for the Venetian merchants.

Protecting the patriarchs of Grado , Pietro III Candiano led a naval blockade of the possessions of their rivals, the patriarchs of Aquileia [3] . In the struggle with Aquileia, Pietro III also successfully used the economic boycott [2] . In 951, the Doge received from King Berengar II not only the confirmation of all the privileges given earlier by the Italian rulers of the Venetian Republic, but also a whole number of additional ones.

In the late 950s, Pietro III was confronted by a distemper organized by his eldest son Pietro [4] . Wishing to become a doge himself, he recruited supporters among the Venetians and forced his father to recognize himself as co-regent. In 959, Pietro Jr. tried to seize power in the republic, but failed. Expelled from Venice, he arrived at the court of Berengar II and earned the trust of this monarch. Having received six warships from the king, Pietro, having made the port of Ravenna as his base, attacked the Venice merchant ships. Already in the same year, with the help of Berengar II and his son Guido , Pietro Jr. was able to return to Venice, overthrow his father and become the head of the Republic of St. Mark. One of the factors contributing to the displacement of Pietro the Elder, was the plague epidemic that swept the city at that time.

After the deprivation of the post of the Doge, Pietro III lived for at least one more year, since his name is mentioned in one of the documents dated 960. The date and place of his death are unknown.

Pietro III Candiano and his unknown spouse had four sons, including:

  • Pietro IV Candiano (died in 976) - Doge of Venice (959-976)
  • Domenico - Bishop Torcello
  • Stefano - known as a slaver.
