Preparation
The prototypes of the characters of the work were real people - members of the “ Flying Combat Detachment of the Northern Region of the Socialist Revolutionary Party ” Vsevolod Lebedintsev [1] (in the story - Werner; at the trial Mario Calvino - Italian citizen), Lev Sinegub , Sergey Baranov [2] , Alexander Smirnov, Lydia Sture , Anna Rasputina (Shulyatikova) , E. N. Kazanskaya (Lebedeva). They were preparing an attempt on the Minister of Justice IG Shcheglovitov , but were betrayed by provocateur Azef , arrested, put on trial and executed in Lisiy nov on the night of February 17-18, 1908.
Andreev made the collision of the “life instinct” and the “death instinct” the basis of the psychological conflict of the story. Introducing the generalized images of people sentenced to death, Andreev used his personal knowledge about V. V. Lebedintsev , as well as the story of a sworn attorney, later discovered in archives in 2009.
On March 16, 1908, Andreyev had a draft version of the work ready, and on April 5 he read a story in his St. Petersburg apartment to friends and acquaintances.
