The city of Oranjemund is located in the extreme south of Namibia, in the Karas region, on the north bank of the mouth of the Orange River, along which lies the state border between Namibia and South Africa , at its confluence with the Atlantic Ocean . Oranjemund opposite, on the southern bank of the Orange, is the South African city of Alexander Bay . Both cities are connected by the Ernest Oppenheimer Bridge. The population is 8.660 people (for 2010 ). Oranjemund is the center of the same electoral district. At 4 kilometers from the city built Oranjemund Airport.
Oranjemund was founded in March 1936 , after the discovery by South African geologist Hans Merensky north of the city, in the so-called diamond Spergebite , diamond deposits. Currently, the territory in which Oranjemund is located is owned by the diamond mining corporation NAMDEB , in which most of the city’s residents are employed.
