History

The cathedral was designed by architect Francis Petre on the basis of the 19th century St. Vincent de Paul church in Paris. [2] Its construction was started in 1901 on the site of a small wooden church, which has been located there since 1864. February 12, 1905, just four years after the start of construction, the cathedral was officially opened. It was the first project of Petra, built in the style of the Italian Renaissance basilica, in contrast to all other works of the architect, created in the Gothic style.

February 22, 2011 the cathedral was badly damaged during the strongest earthquake of magnitude 6.3. Both belfries collapsed, the facade of the cathedral and stained glass were significantly damaged. [3] The question of the possible demolition of the building, and its complete reconstruction in its former place, is currently under consideration. [four]
