Chess Activities

Podtserob was a strong chess player, had the title of candidate for master of sports and played in correspondence competitions (including the semifinals of the USSR championships in correspondence). According to S. Ya. Grodzensky and I.Z. Romanov , Podtserob played in 19 tournaments in absentia and scored 176 points out of 294 possible in them. [2]

He was close friends with world champion M. M. Botvinnik and world champion in correspondence V. V. Ragozin . [3] [4]

According to the memoirs of M. M. Botvinnik, at the end of the 1920s, a time of mass enthusiasm for chess among young people, university philologist Boris Podtserob was deputy chairman of the chess section of the Proletstud in Leningrad: “His memory was amazing. In 1975, while working on the book “Three matches of Anatoly Karpov”, I couldn’t remember the beginning of my game with G. Ravinsky from the 1930 team match. I called Boris Fedorovich. “Well,” he replied, “I was present at this match.” And he dictated the exact order of moves! ” [5] [6]

A similar story occurred with the party Ragozin - P. Noskov from a match between student teams of Leningrad and Moscow (1930). [four]

According to the memoirs of Mikhail Botvinnik, “When S. Flor toured in Austria and gave a clock session to strong Austrian chess players, the Soviet ambassador decided to try his luck. And the whole of Austria gasped in amazement - he was the only participant who won the grand master! ” [3] [5]

In his memoirs, M. M. Botvinnik also gives an example of the art of B.F. Podtserob in analysis - at the end of one of his correspondence parties:

I just have to admit Podtserob’s skill in analysis in general and in the endgame in particular ...
