Sports career
Career start
Andrei Medvedev began to play tennis at the age of ten. At first, his mother, Svetlana , a professional tennis coach who also trained his sister Natalya, helped him in this. Andrei's stepfather, Yuri Cherepov , was his first permanent coach.
Andrei spent his first match in a professional tournament at the age of 16 at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow . At the end of 1990, he excelled in the prestigious Orange Bowl Junior Tournament, and in 1991 won the French Open Youth Championship. In September of that year, he reached the semifinals of the ATP tournament in Geneva , where in the first round he outplayed the thirtieth racket of the world, reigning Olympic champion Marc Rosset . This allowed him to jump immediately to 200 places in the ranking.
1992-1994
In May 1992, eighteen- year- old Medvedev entered the fourth round of the French Open already among adults, having gained three victories over players from the top hundred, including Jacob Hlasek , who was in the top twenty, and lost only to the first racket of the world to Jim Courier . A month later, in Genoa, he won his first ATP tournament and for the first time became one of the hundred best tennis players in the world. This year he won two more tournaments, including the Championship Series tournament in Stuttgart , which he started in the hundredth place in the ranking and where he consecutively beat six rivals from the top 50, including the second racket of the world by Stefan Edberg , and finished the season in 24th place in the ranking.
In 1993, Medvedev won three more ATP tournaments, including two Championship Series tournaments, and twice reached the finals, including in the Masters tournament in Paris . He also achieved notable success in Grand Slam tournaments , reaching the semi-finals in France (before which he beat Edberg again), and in the US Open to the quarter-finals. On the eve of the US Open, he entered the top ten best tennis players in the world, and at the end of the year he received the right to participate in the ATP World Championship . There he won in the group of Courier and Michael Chang , but in the semifinals he was blocked by Pete Sampras , who occupied the first line in the ranking. In addition to success in singles, he scores several significant victories in tandem with Evgeny Kafelnikov and Goran Ivanishevich , with whom he defeats strong opponents at tournaments in Barcelona and Rome . Since 1993, Medvedev has also played for the Ukrainian team . In his first year in the national team, which then played in the third Euro-African group, he spent eight matches and won all of them, and the team that won five “dry” victories rose to the second Euro-African group.
In 1994, Medvedev won only two tournaments, but both from the Masters series, becoming the first European to win two Masters tournaments in a row. Only 10 years later, Marat Safin will be able to repeat this success. [3] After winning the German Open in Hamburg, Medvedev rose to fifth place in the ranking, and to the French Open, where this time he reached the quarter finals, to the fourth, highest in his career. He spent the rest of the year less successfully, having only been in the fourth round at Wimbledon and in the final of the tournament in Prague , and didn’t make it to the ATR World Championship, but he was admitted to the Grand Slam Cup at the end of the year by the sum of his appearances in Grand Slam tournaments, where, however, in the very first lap Sergi Bruger , his offender in the last two Grand Slam tournaments in France, stood in his way.
1995-2001
In late 1994 - early 1995, Andrei and his sister Natalya represented Ukraine in the Hopman Cup . The Medvedev prevailed over Sweden (Andrei lost the singles match to Mats Wilander , but won in pairs), the USA (Andrei defeated Ritchie Reneberg and lost the already decisive match in the mixed doubles) and the Czech Republic (Andrei defeated Peter Korda and lost again doubles match), and in the final they lost to the Germans (Andrei lost to Boris Becker and won the doubles match, which also did not solve anything). [four]
Later in 1995, Medvedev returned to the Ukrainian national team to help her rise one more step in the Davis Cup. In the semi-finals of the second Euro-African group, he almost single-handedly defeated the Egyptian national team . On an individual level, his most significant successes were his second victory at the Masters tournament in Hamburg and his entry into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open , which secured him a second year in a row participation in the Grand Slam Cup. This time he won the first round match, but during the quarterfinal match with Todd Martin was forced to stop the fight.
In 1996, Medvedev again wins one ATP tournament in singles and once again reaches the final. As part of the Ukrainian national team, he again held one meeting (against the Norwegian team) and, having achieved victories in all three games, including the doubles, continued his unbeaten series in the Davis Cup, bringing it to 14 victories. This success helped the Ukrainian team stay for another year in the first Euro-African group.
In 1997, Medvedev won his last ATP tournament, and for the third time he excelled in Hamburg. He achieved this success by occupying the 38th line in the ranking and defeating two tennis players from the top ten - Dutchman Richard Kraichek and Kafelnikov on the way to the title. In the Davis Cup, his winning streak was interrupted by Zimbabwean representative Wayne Black . After losing to Zimbabwe, the Ukrainian team was again forced to fight for survival in the first Euro-African group. Despite the victories won by Medvedev in singles over Greg Rusedski and Tim Henman , the Ukrainians lost to the British team , and only a victory in the match with the Hungarians , where Medvedev won all three games, allowed them to save a place in the group.
In 1998, Medvedev only once made it to the finals of the APR tournament and dropped out of the 50 strongest tennis players in the world. The next year, already at the hundredth place in the ranking, he sensationally reaches the finals of the French Open, taking the upper hand over two tennis players from the top ten of the world Sampras and Gustavo Kuerten . In the final, Andrei confidently led the match against Andre Agassi , winning the first two sets 6-1 6-2, but the American, losing 0-2 on the sets, managed to turn the tide of the game and achieve victory in five sets, thus winning the “career Grand Slam ". This finale allowed Medvedev to not only return to the 50 strongest tennis players in the world, but also to participate for the third time in the Grand Slam Cup, where he defeated the ninth racket of the Krycek world, but lost to Rusedski, the sixth racket of the world, in the semifinal. In the same year, Medvedev reached the only doubles final in his career: with Marat Safin, they lost in the final of the Kremlin Cup to experienced pair fighters Daniel Vacek and Justin Gimelstob . This year, as well as the next, his victories allowed the Ukrainian team to retain their place in the first Euro-African group, and only in 2001 , in the year of the end of his career, the Ukrainians finally lost in the transition tournament of the Austrian national team.
The last tournament in Medvedev’s career was the 2001 St. Petersburg Open Championship , where he, in the first round, already deep in the second hundred of the ranking, unexpectedly defeated the tenth racket of the world, Tommy Haas , but in the next game he lost to Stefan Koubek from Austria. After the tournament, Medvedev said in an interview with the Fakty newspaper that he hoped to continue his performances, [5] but in reality he failed to do so.
