Biography

The grave of Joseph Davitashvili.

Joseph Davitashvili was born in the village of Ruisi in Kartli , in a large family of the serf prince Tsitsishvili and a resident of the city of Gori Maya. Joseph was the youngest of five children. In 1851 , when the boy was only a year old, his parents moved to the village of Gardateni . At the age of twelve, his parents died, and his older sister looked after his brother, who taught the future poet to read and write. Throughout his life, Davitashvili was a carpenter’s apprentice, Prince Tsitsishvili’s court yard, a stone carver’s apprentice, and a Zeitser factory worker , from whom he was fired due to a workers' strike. Recent years Davitashvili spent in poverty. Since 1886, he lived in a dark basement in Telavi , where he caught pneumonia and, having lain for five days, died [1] .

In Soviet times, the name of Joseph Davitashvili was a street in Tbilisi (current name - Amagleba ) [2]
