Biography
The youngest son of Prince Nikita Petrovich Trubetskoy and his wife Alexandra Alexandrovna Nelidova. Nephew of the failed dictator of the Decembrists . The godson of the maid of honor maids E. I. Nelidova [1] .
He was educated in the Page Corps and released from it with the rights of the 1st category [2] . He devoted the first half of his life to military service: on May 26, 1849 he was promoted from ensemble to page as a warrant officer of the Life Guards Preobrazhensky Regiment ; in 1855, he was appointed adjutant to His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich ; in 1862 he was promoted to colonel ; November 10, 1866 reached the rank of major general , with the abandonment of the governor of the Caucasus; in 1871 he was appointed to the retinue of His Imperial Majesty. In 1873-1878, the head of the field office of the governor of the Caucasus.
He participated in the Russian-Turkish war (1877-1878) and, for the difference against the Turks, was promoted to lieutenant general. After retiring from military service, he joined the court and in 1884, at the Highest command, was appointed the marshal of the Supreme Court, renamed secret advisers, and from August 30, 1888, he became chief marshal of the Highest Court, a real privy councilor .
In 1888-1899, the Hermitage was entrusted to the prince. Due to departures from St. Petersburg for a long time, it was not approved by the director of the museum. When Trubetskoy was in the halls of the museum, court balls and dinners were especially often held, and the affairs of the Hermitage were dealt with by Academician A. A. Kunik , a specialist in Slavic studies and Russian history, the curator of the Russian part of the numismatics collection.
According to the opinion of A. A. Polovtsev , Trubetskoy “was a sweet man, wholly devoted to the details of his petty court and high society life” [3] . He died in June 1899 from pneumonia in Stuttgart and was buried next to his mother at the Novodevichy cemetery in St. Petersburg [4] .
Family
Wife (since 1876) - Princess Sofia Iraklievna Bagration-Mukhranska (1850-1932), granddaughter of the last specific sovereign of Mukhransky (1800-1801) and sister of Prince Alexander Bagration-Mukhransky . For the merits of her husband, she was granted the cavalry ladies of the Order of St. Catherine (Small Cross) (07/22/1891). In marriage had sons:
- Nikita Sergeevich (1877-1963), colonel, adjutant of Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich; in exile, Chairman of the Union of Pages and the Society of Adherents of Russian Military Antiquities; Since 1917, married to the ballerina Lyubov Egorova .
- Peter Sergeevich (1882-1958), graduate of the Page Corps, officer of the 17th Dragoon Regiment ; emigrated to England.
